How social are mariners?

My crew knows more about me than my wife. I keep a picture of my DOG in the wheelhouse. Crew Meeting wife = social disaster and they feel the same way. To many stories and boat talk and land life DO NOT MIX. I’ve worked with this crew for about 5 years we do not socialize outside of work, we are all scared of what might be said or how it’s said outside of work.

Just as my profile states, gCaptain is as close as I get to social media. Im not on Facebook, Twitter, or anything else that has been created recently.

If I want to reach someone, I’ll call or email them. Beyond that, I don’t want my life on the Internet.

With the advent of laptops and WiFi in cabins and in all other areas of the vessel people now when they go off watch will go to the cabin and surf the net or go on Facebook, rather than going down and having a game of darts or chess or something like that. So internet has made mariners more social with the outside world, but a lot less with shipmates.

That was my point exactly.

I think what Maersk is really asking here is should they block facebook, twitter and, god forbid, GCAPTAIN (!!!) when they get that fancy new broadband system or keep them available to seafarerss.

Of course it is, I’m not at all surprised. Apparently an instructor got trashed on here one time like 4 years ago and one of the top guys there can’t get over the fact. He lets me hear about it every year at CMA.

I’ve seen quite a lot of officers on the bridge surfing the internet going on facebook on their phones, ipads or on the bridge computer, when they should be keeping a watch, frequently when there’s no lookout present…

Just tell him to go fuck himself Mike…the AMO has fucking ruined the deepsea sector of our industry and because they are such assholes will NEVER have a piece of the biggest prize of all…the OFFSHORE! The effing fools thought they could get in by just adding a DP trainer to their school…good fucking luck! Yeah Jose…I’m talkin to you!

yeah…no shit! glad I’m not the only one who’s noticed this

Although not surfing the web, cell phone use was the cause of the Delaware River Duck Boat incident.
It was a case of being “social”, most broadly defined as interacting, with his (the Mate’s) family, about a situation that he could do absolutely nothing about.
He chose to forget about being a Professional Mariner and decided it was more important to socialize with his family.

2 people died.

Do they lock their doors?

AMO Star Center - Do they sell tickets?
Do they lock their doors?
That would depend on how poor the crew were. They might come robbing.

I think it depends on what they’re watching.
Everybody knows what the #1 use of the internet is.
And no, it’s not insulting each other on gCaptain (that might be #2).

I think it was Steven Wright that said:
“You know why man invented fire? To look at naked women at night.”

Oh my goodness - THAT is so fucking funny - TRUE TOO - It certainly isn’t to watch Kings Point burn down - THAT wouldn’t make yesterday’s papers.

There is a newbee, user name called super62, as I graduated from KP in 62 I’m wondering, super62 doesn’t tell us anything about himself (in 62 it was only men at KP, you see) but it seems he may have came over to read my profile.
super62, if you are my classmate and you do not tell us who you are, that’s not very social - no problemo super - Je comprends.
