Hi ashley. Im a deckhand on the inland waterways. I recently worked with A female on my boat. I tried to help here with some rigging as i would any man. she jumped my shit. Work smarter not harder. I do understand trying to let us know you can do the job. but dont over do it. She was a great hand. and has moved into a captains position and will be out port captain in a couple years according to the company VP. we also have a female port engineer. People seem to like here better. she isnt as abrasive. lol good luck to ya. We like to see more women doin the job out here so dont be afraid to go inland. it only taks 380 days to get ur stearsmens and the 2 years of that to be a capt. maken $100,000.00 A YEAR.
I was directed here from another thread. Whatever happened to this trainwreck?
This trainwreck should’ve stayed where it belonged, in year 2009–given the last posting.
It made no sense for you to post any message at all. LOL Next time, look at the most-recent posting’s date.

I understand, if it was my idiotic, self righteous, self obsessed rants I would not want it TTT’d either. Unfortunately for you, one of the mod/owners pointed out your idiotic thread to another female on here that started off in the same direction, but unlike you was smart enough to shut the fuck up and most likely take some of the advice that was given to her.
hahahahahhha hahah. great. (wipe tears away) hahahaaah…
whoops…
I mean:
“deuce, i think you and ashley should sit down in the crew mess and have a frank discussion to try to work out your differences. you should each try to understand each others feelings before coming back up on watch. when done talking I would recommend coming up here to the bridge so we can all have a group hug and nice cry. then we’ll sing Kumbaya together while holding hands.”
LOL…and that is why a lot of women may feel oppressed today when they want to travel an unknown path to them @ the remarks that my legitimate thread was Idiotic.
Many people in general have not experienced A LOT of things that the next fella has, so asking ANY question should be perfectly fine. Now, if you don’t have the expertise or a fair/rational answer for the person, you ought to not get yourself involved in it.
To the IDIOT, self-righteous guy…don’t get your nuts cracked or d!ked tied in knots over my mentioning of something obvious.
Now, if you would excuse me, I must get back to my most recent hobby: swimming/rejuvenating in the oil spill.
Ashley-
Tis better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than speak and remove all doubt.
seadog!,
Blah, blah, blah…yadda, yadda, yadda
I wonder what other cliche’ you’ll provide on your next lame posting.
awakens the elderly Cpt. and aims him in your direction to spit sea salt on u. LOL
hey ashley, anything happening on your new job hunt: moving into the maritime industry, which is I think where this all started…

True dat, true dat.
Ashley-
A year and a half ago you asked how to get started in this industry.
You were told to get a z-card, TWIC and BST to be a serious contender.
Until you do those 3 things anything you say is blah, blah, blah…yadda, yadda, yadda.
I doubt many on here take you seriously, and you’re certainly not a contender for a job with a top tier company.
There are jobs out there. The competition is fierce, the rewards great.
This industry (and lifestyle) that most of us on here love, needs serious minded young people, boys and girls, joining the ranks or it’ll end.
No one will hold you back because your young and female.
Good luck.
well, i was ignoring this train wreck, but something has gone amiss!
Ashley: You asked for advice. you are looking for a career move. this MAY NOt be the industry you are looking for!
You are contemplating an entry level position, have NO experience, and have stated that domestic and janitorial work is demeaning to your phsyche (sic).
I hate to be th bearer of bad tidings, but on about 75% of tugs as the ‘junior’ deckhand you WILL be cooking the meal. On 100% of the tugs while working as a deckhand you WILL be doing sanitary and soogying. (those are nautical terms for cleaning the WHOLE boat inside and out) You will be required to scrub toilets (heads) and you will have to go shopping for grub to make the meals.
All this is IN ADDITION to line work, making, breaking tow, and standing either bow lookout or a wheelhhouse lookout as needed in visibility.
You are not being demeaned or ridiculed because you are a woman, but because you have (and keep) stating what you want (not to cook), but it is up to YOU what you DO to make this happen.
Of course I don’t know you, but if you came on my boat complaining about having to cook, or showing timerity towards doing your fair share you will be harrassed, embarrassed and chased off the boat faster than you can unpack your seabag! Usually these three methods are far easier and quicker than filing an actual reprimand or diciplinary form!
By the way… Who do you think does all the above mentioned ‘domestic’ chores aboard my boat? A woman? Nope… a SEAMAN! Loose the gender flap, and concentrate on the seamans job. Either show up and do it, or don’t even bother to walk down the dock.
In my case, owning stocks in the companies fare out better than working for them.
I didn’t resurface to ask for more suggestions or help. I just didn’t like the self-proclaimed idiot’s posting on MY thread being the last one to be displayed.
I bit it, alright…and it wasn’t more than I could chew.
no, I want to be the last one displayed!
In my case, owning stocks in the companies fare out better than working for them.
So this entire thread has been a waste of 0’s and 1’s.
Nothing is a waste if information is learned. Any mature person knows that advice and information given to someone can either be used or discarded. When you give the information initially, you are wanting to dispell your knowledge and share it. Put your rope away…geez.
And, as I recall…NO ONE IS OBLIGATED TO RESPOND TO THREADS. So, yes…you may shed a tear for yourself and others that you feel wasted their time to this thread. Moreso, cut them a check, too. SINCE IT BOTHERS YOU SOOOO MUCH.
Last post, I call nobody else can reply, locked it, threw away the key, stamped it, double stamped it neener neener neener.
oooh wow, are we supposed to be impressed because you OWN STOCKS.
Oh yeah, and how do you “OWN” a thread and call it yours?
Ashley, I must apologize…This hasn’t been a waste of 0’s and 1’s… You’ve been a prime example of the Title IX treatment a FEW females expect in this industry. People like you have been a minor inconvience to most of us but a major obsticle for motivated and QUALIFIED female mariners. You started off wanting something for nothing in this thread. If you had taken EVERYONE’s advise when you started this whining, you’d be a QMED or an AB by now.
