Honest opinion, how bad do you think this is going to get?

In my not so informed opinion, @tengineer1 is one of the dudes on this forum who knows what he is talking about when it comes to finances. When he is venting with the anti-Trump choir I skip it but I’m always interested when he posts about investing & the status of the maritime industry. I like to hear it from all angles & from as many sources as possible. I think we are in for an economic come back but I’ve been wrong about a great many things in the past. We just have to wait & see & hedge our bets the best we can.

I sincerely hope you are right and I am wrong. There’s an interesting theory about EM bouncing back first from JP Morgan’s Kolanovic due to the people in those countries getting the BCG vaccine routinely. People in the US don’t get BCG or at least most didn’t as it wasn’t considered needed. Kolanovic is right sometimes but is always an interesting read.

I am buying, everything is still on sale. Although a bit higher than last week or two, you still have to pay your light bill.

Agree… And if he were willing to admit he was wrong in the initial diagnosis of the severity of this pandemic (as were most people), I’d be impressed and would consider removing him from the ilk of the TDS gSquad… Let’s just see

What the heck? You still have cash? You are definitely more patient than me. But as soon as a dividend comes in I have it reinvested by the end of the day. Of my 3 big accounts (2 rollover IRA’s & one 401k) 2 are already above their historical highs. I think the bottom was mid March.

Yes, still have a small bit of swag to work with, always kept a 10% cash position or more. I don’t buy the crazy shit anymore, just what they call “The old guy shit”. Works for me. My younger brother is into some other stuff and has done well, but being older am trying to protect my holdings and get a quarterly paycheck. AMD has been good to him. SFL has been good to me. And yes, everyone has taken a nasty hit the last month or two, but you don’t lose until you sell. I have stuck with utilities and phone/internet type stocks for the last few years. Pick your poison.

I pander to no one.

??? lost me there

Was replying to H’pipe as he wrote below. Usually don’t bother to respond to sensitive souls but accusing me of desperately pandering to some group caused a moment of weakness. I forgive him. He probably just ran out of avocado toast.

“You’re right, democrats (small d) should tie voting rights to IQ test results. Let’s see how that would mesh with the same groups you so desperately pander to.”

Agree it will get worse before it gets better. Without a vaccine or an effective treatment, you will likely have smoldering pockets of contagion everywhere just waiting for fuel (people).

If they just say “screw it” and backtrack, all bets are off. There would a lot of dead bodies and overwhelmed hospitals, but it would possibly be over fairly quickly. The only reason that things have been somewhat under control, is due to the social distancing.

We have just been locked down for another 3 weeks; deep joy.

Winter is coming, so you will be happy to be indoors anyhow. (??)

Winter? We just got through that. Summer and Spring will be welcome. I gotta start my victory garden, once I get my roto-tiller back from my son. Birds are everywhere, a good sign. My mutt is happy.

True. But on-demand testing for the entire populace will be a game changer.

Once you identify who has the disease, you can isolate them and not everyone else. If you have a system where every man, woman, and child is tested weekly in the USA, and the infected people are told to self-isolate, and everyone else takes reasonable precautions for hygiene, life can get back to a semblance of normalcy, until a vaccine is made.

The DPA needs to be invoked. The government needs to be focused on developing this system, using the supply chain of the DOD to do it. If this is already happening, please steer me to the new stories.

Yes, winter is coming.
When? It depends on where you are. Winter is starting NOW in the southern hemisphere.

Although winter is not imminent on the Northern hemisphere, we may have a summer in lock down before it shows up again. (But it will)

Who knows how long it will take to lift the restrictions all around the globe?
Trump can only “dictate” what happens in the US. (Although he would like to rule the rest of the world as well)

Testing is the one thing all the experts harp on. While it’s obviously important, it’s a little hard to quantify how much it helps. People would still have to be very distant and careful. I suppose outbreaks would be more like little brushfires that could be contained.

Dr. Birx has said testing for all is unrealistic. Why? I don’t know. Possibly a political appeasement to Trump.

The DPA (WPA typo?) is still not being utilized in any meaningful fashion. The Titanic is rudderless.

This about sums everything up - The COVID-19 Rules:

  1. Basically, you can’t leave the house for any reason, but if you have to, then you can.
  2. Masks are useless, but maybe you have to wear one, it can save you, it is useless, but maybe it is mandatory as well.
  3. Stores are closed, except those that are open.
  4. You should not go to hospitals unless you have to go there. Same applies to doctors, you should only go there in case of emergency, provided you are not too sick.
  5. This virus is deadly but still not too scary, except that sometimes it actually leads to a global disaster.
  6. Gloves won’t help, but they can still help.
  7. Everyone needs to stay HOME, but it’s important to GO OUT.
  8. There is no shortage of groceries in the supermarket, but there are many things missing when you go there in the evening, but not in the morning. Sometimes.
  9. The virus has no effect on children except those it affects.
  10. Animals are not affected, but there is still a cat that tested positive in Belgium in February when no one had been tested, plus a few tigers here and there…
  11. You will have many symptoms when you are sick, but you can also get sick without symptoms, have symptoms without being sick, or be contagious without having symptoms. Oh, my…
  12. In order not to get sick, you have to eat well and exercise, but eat whatever you have on hand and it’s better not to go out, well, but no…
  13. It’s better to get some fresh air, but you get looked at very wrong when you get some fresh air, and most importantly, you don’t go to parks or walk. But don’t sit down, except that you can do that now if you are old, but not for too long or if you are pregnant (but not too old).
  14. You can’t go to retirement homes, but you have to take care of the elderly and bring food and medication.
  15. If you are sick, you can’t go out, but you can go to the pharmacy.
  16. You can get restaurant food delivered to the house, which may have been prepared by people who didn’t wear masks or gloves. But you have to have your groceries decontaminated outside for 3 hours. Pizza too?
  17. Every disturbing article or disturbing interview starts with " I don’t want to trigger panic, but…"
  18. You can’t see your older mother or grandmother, but you can take a taxi and meet an older taxi driver.
  19. You can walk around with a friend but not with your family if they don’t live under the same roof.
  20. You are safe if you maintain the appropriate social distance, but you can’t go out with friends or strangers at the safe social distance.
  21. The virus remains active on different surfaces for two hours, no, four, no, six, no, we didn’t say hours, maybe days? But it takes a damp environment. Oh no, not necessarily.
  22. The virus stays in the air - well no, or yes, maybe, especially in a closed room, in one hour a sick person can infect ten, so if it falls, all our children were already infected at school before it was closed. But remember, if you stay at the recommended social distance, however in certain circumstances you should maintain a greater distance, which, studies show, the virus can travel further, maybe.
  23. We count the number of deaths but we don’t know how many people are infected as we have only tested so far those who were “almost dead” to find out if that’s what they will die of…
  24. We have no treatment, except that there may be one that apparently is not dangerous unless you take too much (which is the case with all medications).
  25. We should stay locked up until the virus disappears, but it will only disappear if we achieve collective immunity, so when it circulates… but we must no longer be locked up for that?
  26. If you die from getting hit by a bus, mauled by a tiger, cancer, gunshot, whatever, and test positive for COVID, it counts as a COVID death, maybe, always, but not every time depending on what channel you watch.
