Homeport is Gone

In their infinite wisdom, the USCG has decided that Homeport is useless and has been removed.

Silly.

Did DOGE get it?

Not surprised a bit. A year ago, April, May & June 2024 when I was renewing my medical certificate the application status didn’t update once. The time before that in late 2022 I received my new MMC at home then they updated their webpage? I hate to see that option go but those people suck. It work good at first though.

Must be because they don’t make the printer for it anymore

Not NMC. It was a Coast Guard wide application and it was turned off for all Coast Guard use.

What was the thinking behind that? Any idea?

No idea. I don’t use it, and all that filtered down to me was it was to be turned off.

Hopefully

Hell yeah, let’s get rid of the only good thing about the NMC, the ability to track to application status and call when it updates what the issue is. Thank god for DOGE!

I’m not asking this to be combative & I realize different people have different experiences with the uscg & nmc at different times. Last June a no issue medical cert renewal took me almost 3 months & now they have it below 3 weeks again. The people who complained about +100 day simple renewals or fast 21 day simple renewals have no reasons to lie. It’s a crap shoot? @BeerCaptain When was the last time the Home Port tracking or license verification worked for you? I’ve already mentioned my negative experiences starting back in '22. Getting rid of it won’t make any difference to me since I unluckily had bad experiences going back 3 years ago.

“Homeport 2.0 News and Information

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) Homeport Internet Portal (HIP) was established in 2005 to facilitate compliance with the requirements set forth in the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) of 2002, by providing secure information dissemination, advanced collaboration, electronic submission and approval for vessel and facility security plans, and complex electronic and telecommunication notification capabilities.

Since its inception, HIP has been expanded to provide additional support such as Transportation Worker Identification Card New Hire; Electronic Vessel Response Plan; Marine Event Permit Process; Port Status Indicator; Merchant Mariner Licensing and Documentation; Marine Training and Assessment Data (training documentation); Merchant Mariner Certificate; Sea Service Calculator; Merchant Mariner Verification of Certificates; and Merchant Mariner Credential Survey

The Coast Guard will launch Homeport 2.0 in the late summer/early fall timeframe in order to provide a better user experience and improve the security of user information. Upgrades will include fewer site navigation menus and more efficient and secure search functions.”

Two years ago when I renewed. Homeport was updated faster than I was getting emails from NMC by 5ish days.

To protect the nation’s Maritime Transportation System, we are transferring Homeport functionality to more secure information systems. The Homeport system is facing increasing costs and system obsolescence. As a result, it is no longer a viable tool for managing the many functions required to ensure the smooth and safe flow of vessel traffic.

From here.

Just thought of this, but maybe there were outdated cyber security vulnerabilities to the Homeport system.
