HD Hyundai Joins Forces with U.S. Shipbuilder for Vessel Construction

Very interesting. I wonder who these ships (LNG fueled container ships to be delivered in 2028) are for? Also they mentioned partnerships with Fairbanks-Morse who is the US licensee for MAN, so that gives a clue on the main engine and generator supplier. That makes sense as WIN GD has heavy Chinese ownership/influence.

Chouest Containership? Would they get into the business? Wouldn’t be ultimately surprising but who knows. Maybe for Matson or Crowley

Probably for “Osprey Ship Management”, no?

Matson’s most recent annual report states that they don’t intend to build any new ships for a decade and Crowley’s two dry cargo ships are less than ten years old. The logic of ECO building new boxships makes no sense to me as there’s no obvious customer for new tonnage. Only possibility I can perhaps see is a replacement for National Shipping’s 1988-built National Glory. Also, no way anything is getting delivered before 2029.

Hypothetically, would ECO building and manning containerships to compete with Matson/Crowley/Tote be beneficial? Non union, and all in house systems.

More competition is always good. But I don’t see an obvious customer for this ship(s) to be built by 2028, and am very skeptical that a yard with no experience in such construction can build such a vessel that quickly.

If they’re manning them, that would be news to me (and would require A LOT of adjustment to operations and crewing). As far as I know, it’s a build contract only

It’s gotta be for a union then no? Which other company has small to medium containerships that would need a new one in the next 5 years?

Hasn’t Chouset already branched into managing and crewing government owned or chartered ships, including container ships?

It would be better for mariners if there were some variety with a few new shipowners and a few new non-union ships.

Not containerships, but a good amount of gov contracts. Would be interesting to see if they will try and get into the jones act box ship competition. Non union would be cool.
