Has anyone worked with a sex offender on a tugboat?

I remember when I was a cadet on a Lykes break bulker. This particular ship had the reputation among the unlicensed as being “gay friendly”, a fairly revolutionary thing back in the 70s. . . . We had a Neptune’s Court ceremony when crossing the equator. Now, at this point, I had made several trips to the southern hemisphere, but never received a shellback certificate, so was “obligated” to participate. King Neptune was one of the firemen/oilers that was among the gay crew members, and he seem to enjoy having his belly kissed just a little too much. . . . .

The US military brass is okay with it if it supports the mission:

P.S. Do a search on the web and you’ll be stunned by the number of registered sex offenders living within a few miles of wherever you are. Who knows how many fail to register.

its the national sport in Cambodia

Knew a tankerman who -in fit of jealousy- chained his wife to a tree in his backyard. Left her there for 3 days.

We have had more than one individual nailed for child pornography aboard ship. If you are going to do something that horrific, keep it off the SAMM server, please. Yes there were agents waiting for him on the pier

Yes . Worked with one that was taken away. But the strangest was not a sex offender. Went to a relief asst. engineer job and was told to meet outside the gate. There was a picnic table under a tent with some guys. I told them who I was and this BIG guy stands up, shakes my hand and says he’s glad to see me as I am his relief. He spends a few minutes telling me where to find relief notes then jumps in a cab and leaves. I don’t say much and the other guys are laughing. The guy sounded like James Earl Jones but had on a dress and high heel shoes. Later the chief said the guy was a helluva engineer just liked womens clothes when he went on vacation.

Don’t know about sex offenders… but in the 49 years I’ve worked with convicted crew mates: drug smugglers (really good stories) manslaughter, wife beater, child molester, imbezzeler, and multiple DUI/OUI. Imho about half were decent remorseful guys. The other half were stereotypical smudge buckets who drifted off into oblivion or recidivism.

I have but didn’t know it at the time. I noticed the Asst engineers tatoos on his hand, Asked him about them, got a bit defensive. He did a few trips and I didn’t see him after that . Come to find out the"Babies he loved so much" were victims of this sick bastard. Not the norm, but they are out there.

That’s a sex offender.

The drilling contractors and oil co’s used third party catering crews - most of whom hired their people out of the work release programs from the area prisons. There were quite a few sex offenders from that group in those days. Of course, and I’m showing my age here, there weren’t a whole lot of women out there when I started and, well, is there a better place, particularly for a child molester, than an offshore drilling rig if they absolutely have to release those people? I never felt nervous out there - it was the folks that got their meds all messed up and mixed (and there were quite a few of those) that made me a bit worried.
