Global Fabricated Steel Costs

Good morning all,

I am trying to find an accurate cost per tonne of fabricated steel comparison, does anyone know where the most accurate source of this information would be?

Many thanks

Tom

Good luck. . . yards keep these costs very close to their vests. . .

Fabricated steel…do you mean plate/bar/round stock or do you mean finished, fabricated item? Both depend on many variables not identified in your post. You can try getting some quotes if you need a general idea.

Cost will vary from region to region so there really isn’t a “Global” figure. I don’t have access to any of my old company’s shipyard bids but there was always an item for steel renewal. It was quoted as a cost per pound (or Kg). Obviously the cost would be higher in the States than a China shipyard.

As for a source for this information there are 2 that come to mind. The shipyards that give it, or the Port Engineer/Repair Superintendents that receive it. If there are any Port Engineers that read this forum, they could probably toss out some of the numbers they’ve seen. In the shipyards I’ve been through where there was a lot of steel work to be done we usually had a steel guy with us to keep track of the work and the amount of steel used.

Depends on what’s being fabricated and the kind of complexity, including welding involved. Also, depends on the kind of steel used.

Steel prices vary from region to region and from buyer to buyer, even within the same region. There are also other variables involved such as transportation costs, consumables, labor and other fixed/capital costs which will vary from one fabricator to other.

It’ll be hard for you to get comparisons, looking at the variables involved.

Tom,

You can also check the daily market price for formed steel products, available to traders.

I suspect this is more like what you are looking for.

But shipyard steel costs are more than just the material. . . . I have some rates from some yards that I use in my repair cost estimates, but I hesitate to post them because of the variability. . . . they are also job dependent. . . .
