Northern Hemisphere Version.
PLEASE READ THE WHOLE DESCRIPTION!
I recently came across the absolutely stunning video by Mark Gee and was so moved I showed it to a few friends. Some of them - ‘Northern Hemispherites’ such as myself - couldn’t get their heads around the Moon moving right to left. At first I found it difficult to explain but after some thought, came up with this.
I think, intitially, there is confusion between left/right and East/West - so ignore that. Everything rises in the East whether you’re in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere. The phenomenon is caused by your position relative to the equator. In the North, when facing the equator you’re looking South so East is on your left. In the South you face North - East on your right.
Remember - everything rises in the East.
If you’re in the North and face North, everything rises on your right, but behind you, so it’s not apparent. Now, keep facing North but move South of the equator. Everything that rose on the right behind you is now rising on the right in front of you, so it IS apparent.
Having got that sorted out, I decided to do this ‘Northern Hemisphere’ version of the video. It is as Mark uploaded it except that I have concentrated on the Moon slightly more and flipped the video. Obviously the Moon’s face has also flipped, but as we are not used to seeing it at this angle in the Northern Hemisphere, I don’t feel this is too obvious.
Initially ‘Unlisted’ - I approached Mark for his permission to make this publc.
