Ferry News

Another Norwegian ferry sold to foreign owners, said to be bound for Canada:

Before going there she will undergo major upgrade and refurbishment at Fiskerstrand Shipyard:

From the Facebook pages of Fiskerstrand Shipyard:
The ferry “Kvernsund” is to undergo an extensive upgrade and rebuild which requires it to stand dry for a long time, and will therefore be put on a barge for a period. Our skilled crew has therefore carried out a precision docking where first barges were docked: t

Then the ferry towed into the dock and positioned over the barges:

The dock was de-ballasted and the barges pumped dry:

The dock was ballsted down and the barges refloated with the ferry firmly supported on deck:

Britannia Rule the Waves!!

Just indicative of the baffling level of incompetence of shoreside management.

The glory days of British shipping and shipbuilding are over, as you well know.
The management of P&O Ferries bungled this situation last year :

PS> P&O Ferries and P&O Maritime Logistics are now owned by DP World, Dubai.

Others have problems with their cross channel ferries as well:

It’s not just the Merchant Navy that is let down by shoresiders:

The Type 45 engine problems – it’s not the Royal Navy’s fault (ukdefencejournal.org.uk)

Generally, it’s not the seafarers that let the side down, it’s the idiots in charge.

More and more diesel and LNG powered ferries are becoming surplus to requirements in Norway.
All new ferry route concessions call for “zero emission” ferries, therefore even newer ferries are becoming available for sale, or being converted to meet the new requirement.

Here is the Diesel/Electric MF Melshorn, blt.at Fiskerstrand 1999.
Presently laid up in SandnessjĂžen:

Senior moments occur for people of all ages:

Car ferries in Norway has changed a lot over the years. Here is an example of three generations of ferries in traffic seen from FestĂžya ferry wharf this last Tuesday:
MF Stordal, blt. 1979:

She got a spring in her steps.

MF Ullensvang, blt. 1986:

Flat as a plank

Is the electric ferry sitting on a rock, amidships?
Otherwise, she is just an optical pollution; against this, even a PCTC is a cute boat.

Must be a bit of optical illusion, combined with a rather silly paint scheme.
She was delivered from the builders in June 2019:

MF FestĂžya - Specs:

Yes, that is what I thought, too.
Like the camouflage paint on WW1 ships, where a heavy cruiser should look as a small patrol boat

It looks like Norled is going for silly paint scheme for their new ferries:

If you are planning a car trip in Norway, especially in Western and/or Northern Norway it would be a good idea to get up to speed on how the ferries operate. (There are over 130 different ferry crossings)
Here is a video to help you get ahead of the game:

PS> Cash is hardly used in Norway so payment is by “Autopass” on most ferries crossings.
