I had a teacher named “Easy Ed” at Maine Maritime who taught diesels. No he wasn’t easy. This question was before diamond and titanium drills came about. The question asked "How do remove a broken drill bit from an oil passage in a crank pin. A: Drill it out, B: Use a 1/4 stick of dynamite in the other end and blow it out, C: Use an easy out, D It can’t be removed
The correct answer was B. Maybe they carried 1/4 sticks with them back in the day?

My favorite was the "if your taking fuel, and the hose starts to leak, and makes a sheen on the water, what do you do ?? "
A- use dispersants and wait for the out going tide-
B- shut down and call the coast guard-
C- contain the spill and resume loading-
D- unhook the hose and leave the dock-

I was always told you need three things to have an oil spill
1 OIL
2 Water
3 A witness
One of my favorite test questions was, something along the lines of what is the purpose of the lantern ring in the stuffing box?
I don’t even remember what the 4 choices were, but the answer that I always laughed about was C. To illuminate the stuffing box.

Actually, I thought it was “A”. That’s what it was when I was an oiler anyway.
