No particular reason for this, just looking back on the good ole’ days… When the ships were steel and so were the men, and some of the women-folk were too…

I would have gotten a critical speed and/or an auto slowdown alarm on that first half ahead bell. Then at lunch I’d have to be ready to endure a lecture on the finer points of main engine jacket water temperature regulation from the chief.
Thanks for posting the movie, It’s the more enjoyable thing I’ve seen in a couple weeks. I could almost get sucked into looking for that stuff on U tube or wherever …will look for more!!
There are some great videos on the ewwww-toob of the S/S Badger docking (backing into a slip) on the great lakes. Her EOT’s have a nice crisp ring to them. I was going to post one of those but I couldn’t find the one I wanted. Maybe later…
hey, i know guys that drive tugboats like that. FULL to FULL! nowhere inbetween, and plenty of paperwork to show for it.
Fortunately the Stevenson reversing linkage on a reciprocating steam engine is much more well suited to quick reversing than the gearbox on a diesel!
This one is a little longer (16-17 minutes) but if you’re bored and you have the time it’s worth the watch.
This brings up another question I’ve had for a while but keep forgetting to ask: does anyone still commercially produce reciprocating steam engines? I know there are steam turbines being built all the time (power plants, LNG ships, nuclear naval vessels, etc…) but what about reciprocating steam engines? Under 1000hp they’re supposed to be a lot more efficient than a turbine, but is anyone making them outside of recreational hobbyists?
Steam tubines for marine use are most likely on the way out now that they are able to burn natural gas in reciprocating engines. I would imagine that there is still a market at power plants, refineries and such. . . .
There is a company in Florida called “Cyclone Power Technologies” that is breaking new ground in steam power. They build rotary reciprocating engines with advanced high-effiency boilers that will burn anything you can find that will combust (gas, diesel, cooking grease, wood pellets, saw dust, coal dust, you name it…). They were featured in an episode of “How It’s Made” on the Science Channel. I don’t think they’ve had any great commercial success yet but they are constantly trying to expand the size, power and efficiency of their engines until someone finally finds a commercial application for one that proves to be a commercial success.
At any rate this is the only modern application of a reciprocating steam engine that I have been able to find. I just thought there must be someone out there still making them but I guess not… Oh well, the old days were born so that one day they could die, right?
This is what a modern “steam engine” looks like, boiler and all! What you see is the entire kit and caboodle. Nothing more, nothing less.

God Bless you Paddy
Bill Holden, triple expansion engines and ocean tugs! Who could ask for anything more?

Steam powered ROV’s! What will the boffins think of next?
So now I am going and searching for what movie this is and discover it is titled “The Key”, was released in 1958, also stars Trevor Howard, Bernard Lee and Sophia Loren and takes place during the Battle of the Atlantic AND I HAVE NEVER EVEN HEARD OF IT BEFORE TONIGHT!

To be honest, I hadn’t heard of it before today either. And with such an all star cast too! Good lord, Trevor Howard, he’s been a favorite of mine since the first time I saw “The Sea Wolves” probably a decade ago… I was just bopping around the ewww-toobs looking for good examples of working the old EOT and I came across this… We’ll never see ships and men like that again…
NOW, as for this film itself. I SAY: MOVIE NIGHT AT GCAPTAIN HEADQUARTERS!!! C.Cap, can you foot the bill for the booze on this one?

Steam powered ROV’s now that is funny stuff right there. I can see our ROV tech’s looking at that thing now scratching there heads then looking at each other saying what happened to the TMS and umbilical?
I have an Old Engine Order Telegraph, it came off of a Bushy Tanker in N.Y. Harbor. One of these days I am going to hook it up to the Engine Room Telegraph, which came off of the same Tanker, so they work but have them in different rooms, I just have to convince the wife to let me run the chains and pipe inside “Her” House.
Did you guys know the movie ‘‘the key’’ actually played for close to 20 minits after it reloads? it looks like a great one and I am going to find it someplace … now!! And who is that actress! ooh la la!!! Thanks again for putting that up here, it’s what is known as ‘‘real entertainment’’.
''Movies Unlimited" $20. and it’ll be in your mail box. it’s William Holden and Sophia Loren in a plot even your girl should like.

Be careful what you ask for Tugs, some of these girls now days are into whips, and chains and things that bring pain.
Netflix has the movie listed, but not available.

I’d like to see this movie. Thanks P.W. for posting. The plot summary reminds me of the book “The Captain” by Jan de Hartog
RE; Netflix, I was wondering so looked at Netflix but evidently one can’t check to see if it is available without creating a account, password etc. etc. so heck with it. I might get it someday but I’m afraid all I’ll do is watch TV all day. Meanwhile, I wait for the movie in the mail box but I may be at sea by the time it gets here! Thanks to cmakin for putting up the extra posts, that’ s what got me looking for it.

Yeah, like any woman on the planet would put up with a crusty old bugger like me yet alone live under that same roof? That’s why I rent em by the week from Enterprise. Like their slogan says “we’ll pick you up!”
