Make sure any course you take is approved by the flag-state that issues your credentials, e.g. if you are a US mariner with a USCG issued MMC, make sure the course was approved by the US Coast Guard.
Is it worthwhile to take ECDIS training now even if I am currently on vessels that do not and will not require it, with the view that I will need the cert in the future?
If you read this article,

the writing on the wall seems to indicate that certification to use ECDIS could become quite a bit more than the current 32 hour class.
Thanks for the info everybody.

I recently took the ECDIS C/M upgrade class at the STAR Center, and the instructor told us that it will satisfy the requirements that the Coast Guard is “expected” to come up with shortly. I would take the class - if nothing else it’s one more thing to set you apart from the other guys (for the time being).
Good enough, I have signed up to take the class at Fort Schuyler at the end of this month.
Note: if upgrading to satisfy STCW Management level courses, Advanced Navigation must be taken in conjunction with the ECDIS or within 12 months of each other.
