Drillship Ab's

[quote=marcelmuise;21158]Mike173… That’s an interesting point. When a drilling rig is “on location with the intent to drill” though, the IMO’s MODU Code exempts them from the COLREGs. Usually that’s when anchors are out, or when transponders are deployed for a DP vessel. There’s other Customs and EPA rules that kick in as well. Also the Safe Manning Document doesn’t require a mate on watch when on location. Our SMD doesn’t require any mates onboard at all or even a Master. Just an OIM, two BCO, and two limited Ab. No STCW required. quote]

Thanks for clearing that up. Very interesting. And a little disturbing. But most of all, these companies need to realize that they need to train and produce their future workers.

In answer to your question, I work on a foreign flagged cable ship. We do something many DP vessels don’t. We are actally underway in DP mode. But the company also takes safety and liability very seriously. During daylight, there is always an AB on the bridge, even at anchor. In restricted visibility, 2. Or any time the Mate on Watch feels it’s necessary. At night, always 2, and usually one awake and on standby. The Mate on Watch handles navigation, communications, etc., which leaves the DPO to just do the DP. And the lookout is only the lookout. He doen’t even go on the bridge roof to adjust the day shapes. ABs are sent from the deck to do that.
