Ah well – maybe it’s Viking that’s accident-prone? Haven’t they had several incidents recently?

ms Chemical Marketer is today moored at the ICL Fertilizers Europe CV terminal in Amsterdam.

This company is a subsidiary of the Israel Chemicals Limited and the second-largest company by market value on the Tel Aviv exchange. It is controlled by conglomerate Israel Corp.

As there was no visible oil leakage I wondered what kind of cargo the ship was carrying. The word Chemical in the tankers name gave already an indication. The ship is transporting phosphate from the mining area in the Negev desert to Europe.

We were really lucky that this was not a fully loaded oil tanker otherwise this collision, with a ripped open hull, could have ended in a large oil spill which is hard or impossible to contain in the fast flowing Westerschelde tidal river.

Cripes… The Mrs. and I have been thinking on taking a Rhine cruise with them.

Could you really sign up for self loading cargo?

I would be bored witless sitting on a sun deck instead of navigating.

Well I did intend to enjoy the beverage a good bit.

The Clark Ádám craneship passing the Margít (Margareta) bridge with some clearance. In the Hungarian language the family name is always written first. It is Adam Clark in Scotland.

The Habléany (Foam Girl) or Mermaid is seen here just lifted out of the water. It was raised with four straps applied by Hungarian and South Korean divers under very difficult circumstances, on the feel as visibility was zero in this very muddy and fast flowing river.

Inside the ship four bodies were found, eight are still missing.

Wow.

Limiting the number of vessels on the river? There’s an idea! But how about some sort of traffic control scheme first, might that be a good start? Or how about a traffic separation scheme with small craft channels along the banks, and clear guidelines for crossing it?

As for the city controlling access to the docks, that’s teetering on the brink of being an outright lie. Sure, they grant different commercial entities access to stretches of the docks, but there’s no harbor master’s office, and itinerant space is allocated by the pontoon owners themselves.

Wow, what an excuse! You complied with regulations and then somebody else fucked up to make this happen. This clearly means you did no wrong. And you’re sorry, that’s nice.

This is BS in its purest form: A carefully wrought statement with zero regard for the blindingly obvious facts of the matter. I’ve discussed this with others who have sailed that stretch, and nobody is the least bit surprised.

Both on the port and starboard side aft the fencing is bent but no large hull damage is visible. It looks like the Mermaid was simply pushed over after contact. I estimate the freeboard a little over half a meter but that is somewhat crude.

Obviously they should do something about the traffic situation on that part of the river. It will again be a case of that they fill the well after the calf has drowned.

The Viking Sigyn’s captain said he had not complied with the rules of overtaking, “said Zoltán Borbély, a lawyer, on the M1 channel on Friday morning. The captain had not indicated his intention to overtake, nor did he keep a safe distance”, he added.

The captain’s arrest was lifted after the 15 million forint (= $ 52.161.-) security deposit was paid. However, he has to wear a tracking device, he is not allowed to leave Budapest and he has to report to the police twice a week.

In one of the first clips you can see her swinging broadside to after contact and then rolling heavily to starboard under Viking Sigyn’s bow.

According to newspaper reports there are indications that the Ukrainian captain of the Viking Sigyn was not at the helm and perhaps not even in the wheelhouse at the moment of the collision. He could have been active on the internet as he had wiped the sites which he had visited.

Probably as a routine measure an ophthalmologist has been added to the investigation team that consists out of 39 people. This is a specialist in the branch of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of disorders and diseases of the eye.

Passengers on board the Viking Sigyn have told the police that they had seen the collision and started shouting that an accident had happened. In fact the captain had to hear from the passengers that something was wrong and a collision had occurred.

In the mean time the lawyers are sharpening their knives and claims in the order of hundreds of millions dollars are prepared for damages to human lives as well as non-material damages.

The captain of a cruise ship involved in a May 2019 collision on the Danube River in which 28 people were killed has been charged for his alleged responsibility in the incident and should be sentenced to nine years in prison, prosecutors in Hungary said Thursday.
