Current Turnaround times for USCG License Renewals
The only thing I am seeing on some of the smaller company apps is SEMS and I am currently trying to find out if this is part of SAFEGULF or separate?

Well found out the answer to this one today, I can do a GULF SAFE & SEMS same day for $200.00 2 hours from the house next week.

Knock 'em down fast tracking!

Thanks, J D Cavo!

I just got my renewed MMC but I did not submit my radar renewal with the application so upon close inspection I see it is not on my next MMC (issue date Dec 2014). So, now what? Do I just submit a 719-B with a copy of my latest radar renewal and apply for an endorsement as radar observer? I have the endorsement on my last/current (still valid) MMC.
They do put the endorsement on the MMC.

All that was removed was the expiration date. If you renew and don’t have the refresher course, you won’t get the radar endorsement in your MMC, and you will not be qualified for a vessel with radar until you apply to NMC and get it added. If the endorsement isn’t in your MMC, carrying your course certificate isn’t sufficient. The only reason to carry the certificate is to prove the endorsement in your MMC is up to date.
You probably need to put in a new application, but contact NMC and see if they can do it without one.

Ok, put in my app for VPDSD w/letter from ex employer this afternoon @ 1630 NOLA time with NOLA REC, fingers crossed this one goes as well as the last 3. Countdown started.

My Radar original class in Morgan city is set for the 7th of July (I had said 11th earlier), there is a week off between it and PSC then the next week AB.

I now have a set schedule,

flying home sunday!

next week I am doing SafeGulf w/SEMS in McComb MS then spending the night in NOLA and get my Radio Op the next morning @ Houston/Faulk,

Go back home clean up the home place (I haven’t been home since January), sell my 2005 Ford F-150 cheap so I can pay to be out of work for a couple of months. (PM me it’s a deal, loaded XLT 115k miles, 1 owner, a few whiskey/deer dents but interior is excellent).

Head down on the 6th of July to get ready for Radar class week,

July 14-18th week to knock on doors to see if my 100 ton, plus Safe/Gulf, BST, TWIC, Radio Op, RFPNW, VPDSD, newly acquired radar cert. & approval letter to test for 200ton get me a job anywhere, as in the first one that offers.

If no luck I will take PSC the following week in Morgan City w/Young then AB the following week

1st week of august back on the job hunt and waiting on NMC for Radar & AB unlimited sticker. I will be more than happy at this point to chip paint during dawg days of summer if it means I have a job!

So there ya’ go, will keep all informed of my journey. Wish me luck!

any input/advice much appreciated.

Either the evaluator didn’t get my course completion certificate or just didn’t look at it. I had to re-send it and show the math on calculation of my sea days (70% of military time), but they finally approved me to sit for my exams. Three months from time sent to REC to approval. Unfortunately I’m in the middle of a cross-country move, so I’ll have to delay exams for a little while, but it feels good to have gotten this far! 1600 ton NC here I come!

I had to submit 719-B (all sections, endorsement to license but not STCW) along with TWIC, Medical Certificate, and Radar Certficate and pay $50 evaluation plus $45 issuance. SEND IN YOUR RADAR CERTIFICATE WHEN YOU RENEW!

email received this morning from NMC, concerning application for my VPDSD; Regional Examination Center NEW ORLEANS has received your application and has forwarded it to the National Maritime Center for evaluation. 3 days in so far.

I feel pretty fortunate with New Orleans REC. I have heard and read horror stories about files post Katrina, my letter/form earlier in the year to NMC for my sea service file (all has been submitted to New Orleans over the last 36 years) was mailed to me free of charge in 3 weeks, and the last 3 applications through New Orleans REC seem to have been printed fairly quickly. Here’s hoping the next 3 go as smooth as the previous three.

Will add that when @ Houston/Falck in NOLA this January I was advised to let them do the paperwork as they were having better results through the Hawaii REC. I hired Holly Chetta for that one on a renewal of an expired license and had book in 6 weeks.

If your sea time was recorded on a certiificate of discharghe, it’s contained in the same database that tracks your application and issuance of credentials. Any user of the system can pull up a transcript of sea service for any mariner. The transcript only has sea service that was recorded on a discharge certificate and sent to the Coast Guard, so this doesn’t work for most mariners.

Actually all were letters from individuals or companies. Even the only one I had on a truly commercial workboat company was very vague ('78, '79, '80 & '81) naming only the company on top, (not a letterhead) and the vessels served, doc. # and tonnage, w/days served, this was from Galaxie Marine in Patterson, LA, the rest were plastic boats.

Please don’t tell c.captain about this though. Ah the wrath!

You should see the discharges I get from NOAA. Every ship different, mistakes you have to catch, I mean stupid shit like dates and even ports of shipment/discharge all kinds of crap so don’t feel embarrassed. Just stay on top of it. It’s YOUR career, nobody else’s. You are a free agent, sooner you think that way, the better, so shuck off any corporate habits you may have, buy a big file folder, make them fix mistakes, keep copies of everything, and carry on smartly.

Well the dreaded email that addtional information is required arrived today, 18 days in. Called NMC just now was told:

my letter no longer sufficed & to see, CFR 33- 104.220

as I read Policy Letter No. 12-06, since my seatime towards VPDSD was before March 2014 and have the recent time required also my letter on a company letter head signed by the owner of the vessel should qualify me for VPDSD. I used the exact wording as was successfully used by others here and was emailed by NMC for more info requested. When I called this morning to NMC I was advised my letter no longer sufficed & to see, CFR 33- 104.220 which contained no pertinent info on this. I do not see another NVIC (Policy Letter) on changes.

You really have to ask?

My application sat waiting for an evaluator until last Thursday, July 10. It was approved the next day, and today, July 14 is being shipped out via US Mail. Ten weeks from emailing my renewal package to the REC to issuance.

Completed application/supporting docs for an endorsement recognized by NMC on 5/20/14, issued/mailed today 7/15/14. No requests for anything additional. Land speed record.

Just to update. 4 weeks to the day from submittal to approved to test.

24 days from submission to approved to test, REC Balt

NMC accepted mine on the 23rd. Let’s see if I’m as lucky to get approval in two days

Just did a straight renewal, sent my packet in April 28, new license issued July 10. Then I get a good laugh from the coast guard. Today I get a nasty gram in the mail telling me that my license is about to expire in September. Talk about the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

They told me they have no record of me being a QMED before 2011.

I told them I was working for the goverment in 2010 and they wouldnt have let me sail qmed without the the endorsement.

They said it didnt matter…I had to find a copy of my MMC from before 2011 to prove that I had it : /
