Rather surprising is the amount of damage to the wheelhouse considering it was described as a slow sinking that took several hours.
I’d imagine that she slid off the blocks as the dock listed and then the top of the house crashed into the side of the drydock is what caused the W/H to accordian like it did
It was the dock that listed which brought down the tug. Used to work on that boat, great tug, those triple barn door rudders sure can steer it for a bit when you’re out of gear. Unfortunate event. I heard that the Coast Guard hadn’t been too pleased with how Everett shipyard had been now and in the recent past, does anyone have further info on that?
Man that sucks! I have been on a tug when the dock started to list. We were lucky the she stayed on the blocks. Trust me I was looking for a way off but the gang way was the first thing that fell.
Update: The Invader has been sold to AMIX of Vancouver BC they towed her away last night. Guess they are going to completely rebuild her and use her in Canada. The Pathfinder (one that grounded a few years ago in Prince William Sound) has had the bottom rebuilt and is owned by Stabbert now in Seattle. Rumor is Foss has chartered her as I see she is sitting at their dock as of today.

We operate a boat designed by the same engineering firm with the same triple rudders. The convenient thing is that the outboard rudders are offset from the shafts so you can pull shafts without dropping rudders. And let me tell you, those rudders are STOUT. I have never seen anything like it on such a small vessel. Wilmington Transportation dropped some dollars when they built their boats but they must have done something right to have built the only conventional tug still docking ships in SF bay.
