If the young fellows haven’t overtaken me by now, they never will. It would have happened already if was going to.
As a former fisherman and vessel owner, I have a lot of respect for fishermen, but don’t expect me to be too overly impressed by a guy that has a license restricted to fishing vessels only.
While way off the mark, this reminds me of a story. Many years ago, after Hurricanes Katrina/Rita, myself, my boss and another adjuster were at the Louisiana office of a major oil company, making plans to organize surveys of the offshore platform damage. The oil company had many of their engineers, financial guys and operators present. I was seated next to the company CFO. As our plan was laid out, one of the company engineers raised his hands and asked, “So, what are we missing in all of this, anyone?” No one had an answer. He then said, “What about PPE and other safety protocols?”. My boss then asks, “Oh, are you the HSE manager?” And I, with no regard to who I was sitting next to just had to chip in with, “No, but he stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night!” The room when silent. My boss kicked me under the table. Then, the CFO started laughing, along with the rest of the room. The engineer sheepishly sat down and looked embarrassed. Later, when going offshore with a couple of others in the room, they told me that the guy who asked the question was a major Ahole, and that I had done the exactly correct thing. . . oh, and once the CFO started laughing, my boss was VERY relieved.
Since the USA was established, allowing people to live and work has not bankrupted anyone’s children. At what age did you promise your infant son you will either die or retire in order that he may have a job? Honestly, if jobs are so hard for you to find that you must lament the fact that older workers have jobs you desire you need to look at why jobs are so scarce for people with your qualifications or lack thereof.
Covid is not a binary disease where most live and a few die. Pay attention to the lasting effects in survivors.
Many Covid survivors have long term medical problems that are keeping them out of the workforce, or making them less productive.
Covid appears to set off new onset diabetes mellitus. (type 2). Covid is also linked to severe cognitive problems. Brain fog. Confusion. Early dementia.
It’s going to take a massive toll on our population for decades to come, and cost one hell of a lot. Why gamble when you know there is a way to help keep yourselves and your families safer?
I don’t have any issue finding jobs. My issue is with the millions spent on ill thought out Covid-19 protocols.
More people would take this seriously if people would stop pretending it’s worse than it is to validate their own fears. In Hunter S. Thompson’s book ‘Hells Angels’ one of the HA members has a quote. ‘Why do people need to make stuff up about us - ain’t the truth bad enough for them?’. So it is with covid-19.
Nice edit. My licenses aren’t restricted to fishing vessels only, that’s just the only ones I bothered to list because that’s the industry I choose to stay in.
I stay in it because it pays substantially more and performance is valued more than politics. Well, it pays me more. Perhaps if you were better at it you wouldn’t be a former vessel owner and you would understand.
Major news from the CDC: If you’re fully vaccinated, you don’t need to wear masks, even indoors. The next question: when will the USCG rescind its rules on mask wearing on non-passenger vessels?
I wonder if this could be considered a direct order from the CIC. Hmm…
”Today is a great day for America,” President Joe Biden said during a Rose Garden address heralding the new guidance… “If you are fully vaccinated, you no longer need to wear a mask,” he said.
The latest CDC guidelines explain why they advise that fully vaccinated people don’t need to wear masks.
Vaccines not only eliminate or reduce symptoms, but they also reduce the chance of transmitting the virus to others.
…Currently authorized vaccines in the United States are highly effective at protecting vaccinated people against symptomatic and severe COVID-19. Additionally, a growing body of evidence suggests that fully vaccinated people are less likely to have asymptomatic infection or transmit SARS-CoV-2 to others…
The vaccines work so well that a fully vaccinated person doesn’t need to be quarantined after exposure to an infected person. …Most fully vaccinated people with no COVID-like symptoms do not need to quarantine, be restricted from work,or be tested following an exposure to someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19, as their risk of infection is low…
There is shrewd psychology at play in the CDC’s guidance: …Taking steps towards relaxing certain measures for vaccinated people may help improve COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and uptake…"
Got my second Pfizer shot last week. Dude to give a bid on a heat pump estimate on my sons new home. Showed up with a mask. I thanked him for his attention to detail and told him I had both shots. He kept his mask on regardless. Hoping the third bid is the best. Am glad most of our pals in the USA are taking this shit seriously. To the fellow that claims we are avoiding you by not travelling early on, absolutely correct. Get the shot or shots you frigging iidiot. Because I got the shot, you are safe from me, Others who follow a path like yours, are not safe from you. The shit is still out there.
The ancient Gordian knot was solved by a nicely placed sword. Read that in my folks door to door sold Britannica Encyclopedias many moons ago. My Mom also bought the Kirby Vacuum that did everything but paint the house. My pop on a Navy Chiefs salary was ok with the books, not the Kirby. Pretty sharp dude and a helluva lefty in baseball.
