Costa Concordia Disaster - What happened?

Does anyone know if there are any other videos of the ship actually grounding at it’s final position? It seems that there were some islanders with cameras that caught footage of the ship grounding. This could provide some idea of how much damage the right side has. Also, there was a video on YouTube of the ship actually rolling over with it’s lights still on but YouTube removed it.

I’ve read a lot of discussion here about how the ship ended up aground. There seems to be several debates in progress - basically coming down to an argument whether the prevailing current or the actions of the ship’s master (using anchor or thrusters) did the job.

My question is, “Did Captain Schettino actually let his ship drift for 30 or more minutes in a sinking condition without notifying anybody?” What possible logic could apply?

My followup question is, “Did Captain Roberto Bosio commit an act of mutiny?”

If we praise Alex Thompson for taking risks with human life, and showing off to attract attention on himself and his sponsor, as reported on http://gcaptain.com/tons-carbon-fiber-yacht-crazy/?39020 yesterday and on http://www.alexthomsonracing.com/2012/02/all-is-revealed-the-keel-walk-take-2/ (“major risks : The boat coming down on top of Alex, the jet ski and its driver”), should we blame captain Schettino for showing off to attract attention?

Ay Yai Yai !!!
Really, Tachibana, you are over the top.

Effing rich PUNKS!

Who is praising this Darwin example?

These guys are all paid to do this. They are risking this at their own peril. I am not so sure the passengers on the CC are in the same boat so to speak.

Heiwa,
First citation wouldn’t open. Second, very interesting Video. Thanks! First one I’ve seen that shows much of the lifeboat process and describes the problems first hand coherently. Key question is when were the photos & video were taken. Apparently they sounded the emergency alarm before the 180º turn, when it was still fairly level, and people mustered at their stations, with a lot of confusion. Life boats as far as I can tell were not dropped until after the ship went aground. (first lit up & listing, stern down photo shows starboard boats in place. Coast guard photo?) What angle of list still permits the lifeboats to drop without scraping the sides or hanging up? How are you measuring the under 15º since the camera may not be level? At 2:51 it looks like about 30º.

The boat they are boarding appears to be one of the shoreboat/lifeboats with the removable side openings. The three port side shoreboats were the three that weren’t successfully launched. Their square shape may have been part of that.

Je crois que la réponse correcte est : “Fait Accompli!”

Vous êtes épiderme trop mince! Une plaisanterie mal faite, peut-être, mais une plaisanterie néanmoins.

Wow, pretty quick to surrender. Oh, wait. . .

I didn’t say that, BUT…

Peut-être comme le Costa Concordia !!

Prior to deletion, post #441 contained a translation of an Italian media source claiming the VDR is, in fact, recoverable.

In other news there is a long and informative thread on the accident at http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/showthread.php?t=42791 .

Ok … I went there, what does this mean? Is the Black Box data recoverable or not?
Ok … I went there, what does this mean? Is the Black Box data recoverable or not?
what I recall from the post is that some source (European I believe) has stated that the VDR data is intact afterall but that a backup copy was not made or at least something to this effect. Perhaps being the swell guys they are, someone at gCaptain will sniff this one out for us. They might even be able to access that post from our Francophile friend who had the hissy fit?

Also need to toss out a big “I’m impressed” to both cappy208 and Sweat-n-grease for knowing French (or did someone use Google translate?)

babelfish BUT, I have enough manners to talk to a dispirited man in his own lingua franca when appropriate!

Absolutely NO class, But manners!
Is the Black Box data recoverable or not?
F***ed if I know at this point. There’s three stories in the media (black box inoperable, VDR operable but bridge voice recorder inoperable, VDR external capsule inoperative but VDR data accessible from hard drives mounted in the bridge) but nothing from Italian authorities one way or the other.
