Coast Guard searching for mariner 60 miles southwest of Port FourchonNEW ORLEANS – Coast Guard and commercial crews are searching for a missing crewman from the offshore vessel Dustin Danos 60 miles southwest of Port Fourcon, Saturday.
Watchstanders with Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report of a missing crewman last seen aboard the Dustin Danos earlier in the day. The crewman was last seen wearing gray long johns and a white T-shirt.
Coast Guard aircrews from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans and Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile, Ala., are searching for the missing crewmember along side the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Pelican, the crew of the vessel Dustin Danos, and a commercial helicopter crew.
I am already on record saying that it is time to make wearing PLB’s mandatory when working on deck offshore. The investment is NOTHING compared to the saving of life and the money spent on searches!
That’s a good point C.Captain, which is why I had made that investment myself, and carry it when I feel there is a danger of going overboard while on deck. And I should really wear it more often.
How much do they cost, and can I take one on an airplane?

Hamilton Marine has them for as low as $270 but they might even be lower on eBay…
A BARGAIN AT DOUBLE THE COST if you are in the water!
as far as taking on an airplane, I see no reason why not as long as you don’t activate it in flight!
Never had a problem with it. They’ve come down in price a lot of the last few years. They range from $200-$500.
Thanks for the info. I think i’ll invest in one because if I have to rely on a blueberry to save my ass, I’m toast. I maintain small boats in the davits so I am over water quite a lot.
Not to seem insensitive - and my heart goes out to the lost mariner and his family…
but I was wondering how often MOB cases are actually suicide attempts.
It’s a stressful vocation to begin with. Add problems back home, perhaps a poor relationship with shipmates, underlying mental health issues…
just wondering out loud.
I have heard plenty of stories like that, mostly from big ships though. Im sure it happens on other types as well.
Or homicide? And suicide equally. Wasn’t too long ago in block island sound, quite the rumors were flying.
Check the District 8 news this morning and no update…I guess our man is lost which to me is very sad news.
People need to wear PLBs…if he had one on, they’d have found him but without one, you are just lost at sea. Such a pity.
You may want to check this site before purchasing a PLB. There are several different models for various intended uses:

They do take the “Search" out of Search and Rescue.
Well, I will be shopping for one this holiday season and I’ll post up if I get a good deal somewhere. Thanks again for the info, all.
Reinhauer boat?

Block Island Sound is my backyard and I haven’t a clue what you’re talking about to. Gimme the backstory please…

Stephen Scott, my bet is he was looking out a door at the barge, decided to take a leak. I did however hear some not so nice rumors
Yeah. Didn’t know him personally but from what I heard it couldn’t have happened to a “nicer” guy.
