Coast Guard searching for mariner 60 miles southwest of Port Fourchon

I guess the tug Stephen Scott is named after him.

No, the tug involved with the MOB was the Stephen-Scott. Really low bullwarks compared to most boats.

Double post!

If one is considering buying a personal beacon there are a variety of options depending on who you are expecting to look for you. I think so far folks have been talking about 406mHz satellite PLB’s (hopefully with internal GPS) which are functionally just like your EPIRB but with a smaller battery and not necessarily positively buoyant. A PLB is great if you boat sinks in the Gulf of Alaska but might not be the preferable option if you are bobbing around the oil patch watching boat pass every five minutes. If rescue by your own vessel or other nearby vessels is a likely option think about one of the AIS beacons or a handheld VHF with GPS/DSC built in. There’s one interesting option that is being marketed primarily to scuba divers called the Nautilus Lifeline which might be nice to have in your pocket but does have limited range due to a fairly low power transmitter.

A very good point! I always did wonder how the vessel you fell off of would find you unless it was equipped with a 406mHz receiver with DF capabilities.

best to have the PLB and a submersible VHF with you as well. of course, you also need to be wearing an immersion suit too!

These units require one to push a button to activate. Wonder if there is an option for water activation in the event one is knocked out? Might be worth a few extra shekels eh?

Great deals from Gil @ semperfifishing on the hulltruth.com…haven’t ordered anything from him until today (new simrad unit) but he has an excellent reputation there. PLB’s from ACR starting at $265 with bonus stuff from ACR…ditch bag, strobe etc.
