Chouest layoffs without unemployment legal?

when i got my self shit can in 2000

they lie to unemployment so they would not pay unemployment

i was there 10 years

I know PLENTY of used car salesman who have more integrity than shore side personal.

Office staff? Stop spreading the bs, everyone knows ECO is laying off and cutting wages to stupid levels to force people to quit. For my “captain” friends who have been let go but told they are still employees to somehow force them to not file I only say file file file file. And while they are at it a class action lawsuit for the 401k theft sounds like a winning proposition!! I keep hearing class action class action, mr Gary can’t run from his labor crimes forever.

There will be no lawsuit no one has the money to go against a whole office floor full of lawyers. It’s cheaper to lay off other people and keep the lawyers to fight off frivolous lawsuits such as this.

Well, if you are for real (which I seriously Doubt), I am sure there would be a lawyer that would and could used every word that you have posted here against you. If and when this happens I would hate to be you as I am sure some of the other employers that get caught up in the Law Suit would love to take you for a little walk in the Bayou.

Didn’t you see the sign that says "Don’t feed the trolls’?
Most of the guys who have been laid off or furloughed from the oil patch are not out of work. They are just working somewhere else, maybe for 25 percent less money, but it’s still good money. They are getting paid the same as the rest of us.
Most of these guys don’t have towing licenses so I would be highly surprised if many of them have jobs elsewhere yet. I also feel sorry for the suckers that only have an OSV license…

There really isn’t that much work out there at all right now. Even with every license available, jobs are hard to find.

Oh don’t feel sorry guys with OSV only licenses surely had been told by people over the years to upgrade. Same way I don’t feel sorry for guys with mate of towing licenses and no STCW.

I often got weird looks when I would advise people to get every license they possibly could, including the unnecessary Unlimited license.

The replies were frequently, “I don’t plan on going anywhere” and “Chouest never does layoffs.”

Capt. Phoenix,

I have been through the same thing. When I was at ECO I encouraged anyone that would listen to do the same. I have many people that I consider good friends and if not good friends just someone that I thought was a good person. Get everything you can. I never intended on leaving ECO. I loved it there. It was a great place to work. I started there just before the big building boom and was able to capitalize on the aggressive growth. I got my 500 Master, my 1600 Master, my large OSV Master, my towing Master and then started on my unlimited. Before I left there I had received my 2nd mate Unlimited, working on my chief mate courses and even then I had no intentions to leave. I just wanted some options. Back then it was hard to even imagine that the ride would end. People were finally making a good salary for the first time in our lives. Of course I did end up leaving. I finally woke up to the fact if I wanted to make even more money I would have to leave. For a couple of reasons. We had got a huge raise back in 2006 I believe. That year the raise was over 200 dollars a day. I thought to myself why did we get this. The day rates on the boats had not gone up so why all of the sudden am I getting an extra 50K plus a year. Then in one days time I was told I had to leave the vessel that I was assigned to for the past 5 years and go on another boat. It really rubbed me the wrong way. I was so mad, and would have quit on the spot if I did not have a family. I made my mind up right then that I was leaving. Looking back at it now I should thank the coordinator for crapping on me. I would probably still be there today.

With all this said I am not immune to this downturn. Fortunately I am in a better position than most, but in todays environment that can change in a heartbeat through no fault of my own. All I can do right now is do my job to the best of my ability and try my best not to screw up too much. No one is interested in what I think about this. All they want from me is cost cutting measures, keeping the operation moving forward and don´t let anyone hurt themselves. If my vessel can keep its job until this is over is all I can hope for, because if we were to lose our contract we would all be on the pier. It is always good to have options. You are never too old to start.
