Hello everyone,
I’ve been trying to better understand how procurement works within ship management and vessel operations, and I’m curious to hear from professionals who deal with this daily.
From what I have observed, vessel procurement seems quite complex compared to many other industries because of factors such as global logistics, urgent spare part requirements, supplier availability, and the need to ensure compatibility with specific equipment makers.
A few challenges that seem common from an outsider’s perspective include:
• Long lead times when vessels are operating in remote locations
• Price variations and lack of transparency between suppliers
• Managing urgent requisitions from vessels while controlling costs
• Tracking inventory and usage across multiple vessels
However, I imagine there are many operational challenges that only people working in ship management or marine engineering experience firsthand.
For those working in vessel procurement or technical management:
What are the biggest challenges you still face today?
Are current procurement or ERP systems solving these problems effectively?
Where do you think the industry still needs improvement?
I would really appreciate hearing real-world experiences and perspectives from people in the field.
Thanks in advance.
