Box boat aground in Suez Canal

Yes, you are right. That the Dutch arrived at the place of the incident, when the ship was already freed by the Egyptians, was not more then a stroke of pure luck. If I were the SCA I would not pay them a dime for work not delivered.

The only experience I’ve had is with a steam turbine driven tanker 50,000 tonnes DWT towing a sister ship 900 miles to Colombo. Both vessels were loaded. The first insurance wire from the towed vessel parted and after a great deal of physical work the insurance wire was transferred from the forecastle aft and the tow was resumed. A third insurance wire was passed from another company ship while the tow was underway to the towing vessel.

And they did it without the help from aliens

If the SCA had only asked Israel to use their “space lasers” to cut a bypass channel they could have saved a lot of time.

Thanks for asking. No, I just participate in a friendly discussion here about maritime matters. I do most in writing so it is easy to copy/paste what I write and point out what you don’t agree with. With regard to EG she early Tuesday turned port/starboard in the canal and went several meters up on the east, rocky canal bank and stopped and blocked the canal. Just look at the photos. I assume that the EG fore peak and hull bottom fwd got damaged on the process. And the solution of the incident was simple. Just pull the EG stern out into deep water using tugs, trim the ship >10 meters on the stern, back off, etc. Regarding marine conspiracy theories I have published my opinions about the Estonia 1994 sinking and the Costa Concordia incident 2001 at my webpage. Nobody has shown I am wrong. Plenty fools get upset about it.

I don’t know who Nobody is but at least you admit he has shown your are wrong. The rest of us just take the approach that we don’t need to prove that the Sun is responsible for daylight and the Earth is not flat.

My scaled-down experience of towing with boats not designed for it was that it was a PITA because the normal attachment points near the stern are far enough aft to make steering difficult if the tow got out of line very far and it REALLY sucked with a stuck tow. I cannot imagine using a ship to tow another ship in a narrow canal, the other ship would be aground shortly.

Mine was a 750’ fast combat ammo supply ship with four General Electric LM 2500 gas turbine engines. The forces created by towing a sister ship would have been awesome. Luckily we only drilled for a tow . I didn’t mind any other job on the ship but I would have been off the fantail well before any load was put on that giant sized towing gear.

Absolutely. Discretion is best when very large heavy things are under tension. A pelican hook under tension when released by a trip wire on the saddle is best watched from a distance.

As per vesselfinder.com

The livestock carriers that are in the southbound convoy are.

Tulip
Jersey
Hajh Amina
Omega Star
Unimar Livestock
Sea Star

In my many years at sea on “haze gray” ships, we often did “tow, and be towed” exercises. Very common when in STANAVFORLANT, working with frigates and destroyers from NATO nations. Never a fun evolution, always a learning experience, and this was on 4000-8200 ton warships, not large commercial vessels. Very manpower intensive to roust out all the gear and get it properly rigged.

There were a few outbound livestock carriers as well just before the opened it up for inbounds. Not sure if any cargo or not.

I mentioned the livestock ships because I read somewhere they were very concerned with running out of feed for the critters as well as all the other normal concerns associated with livestock ships.

The shorter the transit time for then the better I would imagine. Even if they are filled with next week’s supper the animals have to arrive alive and somewhat healthy.

Some of the effects of the grounding:

But now both charter rates and oil prices are falling since the canal is open again.

The first few ships in the first South bound convoy from GBL has already entered the Red Sea, incl. some cattle carriers.

The first convoy from Port Said is already in the northern part of the canal

The End!!

Removed.

On smaller vessels not equipped for towing or only equipped with bits far aft, I would opt for a hip tow.

A nice chuckle sir!

Plenty fools you say? I have discovered another forum you once contributed to where there is a 114 page thread taking you apart line by line…it started in 2012 and continued for eight years! I am sure you do not mind me posting this link to it since you obviously know that each and every person contributing to that thread was a fool just like you know that everybody here in this thread is likewise. Please confirm for all of us here that on the entire planet of 7.5billion humans you are the only one who really knows the truth about everything? It must be indescribably difficult for you to go through life having a brain infinitely superior to every other person anywhere? I pity your empty loneliness.
