Can anyone tell me if these companies have organized steersman programs and how they work? Thanks.
I can only speak of Florida Marine. FMT has an organized steersman program. If you begin as a green deckhand with them, then they want you to spend five years with the company, work your way through their ranking system (Green deckhand, Deckhand, Deckhand 2, Tankerman Trainee, Ticketed Tankerman Trainee, Tankerman 1, 1A, 2, 2A, 3, 3A, then they will send you to steersman school). 3A Tankerman paid $285 a day when I left there. I decked for FMT from a green hand to Tankerman 1 and went to steersman school myself. Don’t do that unless you have someone already lined up to train you, because FMT will not allow their masters to train you if you didn’t go through their system. It was told to me that the FMT steersman program was looking to be revised in the near future, but that was when I still worked there a year and a half ago.

Really an avatar should be an image that is an extension of what your username is. You don’t put your real name as a username but maybe in this case, he did that too.

I believe we have gone off track from the poster’s question. However, I shall change my profile picture, even though that picture was taken on a boat! It was her first time being on a boat, since I live on boats, I thought that she must at least experience STEPPING on one, so we went on a little river cruise. It was great, but their sax player was shiiiiiiiiiitty. Now I just need to get my pictures off of my computer so I can change it.
