As green as can be, help!

Hey everyone,
As the subject says I am new to all of this and I am getting a bit confused looking at the NMC website. I am trying to get my MMC. First off, the MMC is what used to be called the MMD correct? Secondly, which application do I process? I am looking on the fees page and I cant figure out which one applies to me. I have my TWIC from being a truck driver. So now I just need my MMC to start applying for jobs correct? Any information anyone has would be greatly appreciated. Also any advice on entry level/deck hand jobs and how to get them in the Philly area would be great also.
thanks!

GOOD FUCKING LORD! You can’t be seriously making such a first time post.

Oh I know! This is a joke and you’re the Joker…right? For the love of God, please tell me it is so.

Man, I seriously suggest you do not post anything else asking for information until you have searched the forum for the very same subjects you are asking for. I think these were all answered like 4 days ago, For the quadzillionth time. I was new here not to long ago too and the search tool is your best friend on here.

Seriously, Im wondering if we should somehow make it so new users can’t post anything until they have ran at least 50 search requests through the forum.

Holy shit Im taking lumps! lol.

Yeah thats a pretty good description of me ha ha. Sorry guys, didnt realize I would really piss some people off for just asking a few questions. I have done quite a few searches (senior guys yelling at new guys for asking stupid questions) and yes I do understand the basically the process. I have already downloaded the “entry level” package from the NMC website and there are a few things that I am still not sure of. But dont worry I will be sure to search until I find my answer. Hey at least I tried to post the question under the “Maritime training and Certification” forum. I guess this probably wont even make it through the moderator due to the fact that I am guessing that this is his website. However I did notice that he seems to enjoy his little position of power reprimanding all the newcomers. But I guess you get that wherever you go. I saw it during my 5 years in the Navy and I see it in the truck driving industry. It was pretty funny though to see one question asked by a female in the NYC area that seemed just as uninformed as any other and his response was something along the lines of " I know people in the industry private message me and I will hook you up" haha. Anyway sorry everyone I will keep my posts minimal and keep on the search option untill I am an old salt like yall. Great website though jokes aside lots of great info.

Not every noob question has been asked and answered repeatedly. I was just last week helping my brother get his MMC. The payment page on the NMC website is not very clear and does not have an option for original with no endorsements. Give the guy a break. Forums are interactive, google is not. Although there may be similar questions answered in the search function, it’s always nice to get a specific answer tailored to one’s specific question with a chance for follow-up questions.

As for the question, yes, the MMC replaces the old MMD and paper licenses. Can’t help you much on the fees page, I think my brother over paid for his because of the crappy NMC website. A TWIC and a MMC should get you into the job market. As for the last part of your post regarding where and how to find a job, I must concur with the grumpy guys on here and refer you to the search function.

You would have known that if you had taken even thirty minutes of time reading though old threads before shooting you big Bazoo off like you did.

Btw, I am hardly the resident moderator here…more the nasty old man in the retirement home who hates everybody!

Ha ha!

You can always call the NMC during W.Va. business hours to clarify the fees question. They can be pretty helpful.

Thanks. Yeah I was thinking of doing that. I will. Also I am reading a book called “the new hawsepipe” that recommends always actually bringing in your application to the REC. I figure if I do that I can probably ask a boatload of questions while I am there. Anyway it is going to take a few weeks to get my physical done. So probably by then I will have a lot more figured out.

Have you looked into whether or not your Navy time will count as sea time?

Not yet. I want so bad just to ask here but dont want to get yelled at ha ha. No but actually I have seen a few posts about that so I will search it a bit first. Actually I know or am pretty sure there will not be any posts that really pertain to my exact situation. I was in the Seabees. So I actually never went near a ship. Although my tour was broken into shore duty and sea duty. So I am guessing that as long as my service record shows my sea duty time, it will count. Funny though I was thinking about that and how it could possibly put me in a funny situation. What if my service record allowed me to start as an AB, but then I get my first job and I have no idea which way is up on a ship. Ha ha dont think the search option will help with this one. I will look into it. I was a construction mechanic 3rd class (desiel mechanic)

Ha ha I like your style. You remind me of this old bowswans mate 1st class that was attached to my battalion. He was a nasty old salt. Never a dull moment.

You should send in your info/package to the NMC and just have them eval it. Do you want deck or engine? Engine is the smarter choice fo sho!

I am considering that right now. To tell you the truth deck seems more appealing to me. I picked construction mechanic when I joined the navy as a kid for no particular reason. So thats where I learned and spent 5 years doing it there. Then I did it for 7 years civilian. About 4 years ago I made the switch to driving and have never looked back. Im not really in love with the idea of knuckle bustinh for the rest of my life. Anyway right now I am just trying to get a good idea of what the industry is like. I am guessing there are more opportunities in the engine room? I have a contact on a local tugboat here in philly so I am going to do a ride along soon. So I will ask many questions then and try to decide. To me tasks involving actually running the boat seem more up my alley. But then again that is probably just my retarded romantic idea of what it is like having nothing to do with reality. So yeah right now weighing my options.
I called the nyc rec yesterday to ask questions and they were very polite and helpful. They gave me a navy number to call to get my service record/sea duty information. I do have the service record I discharged with that has my dd214 . I wonder if that is all I need?

You can use copies of evaluations and page 4 but you should also send for your sea service letter from the Navy. Send as much stuff as you can to support your application.

Your sea service letter may take a few months so send for it now.

Yeah, what Cat said! It took over 90 days for me to receive my service record from Missouri. They will send some hard copies with a cd. The cd will have all of the info you need. Just a side note: ask for your medical record as well…good to have for future reference. I think the form is SF 180 or something like that. It’ll come up on a google search or just call that navy number.

Yeah I called this morning. 866 272 6272 national archives if any one else needs it. But actually you cant request over the phone anymore. So go to vetrecs.archives.gov (no www ) anyway I will get it ordered tonight after work. So as I stated earlier I was in the Seabees. Nothing to do with the fleet navy. The closest I came to a ship was picking up a buddy at 32nd st. I was reading on the websites examples they are going to be looking for what ship I was on and things like that. The way it works in the seabees you do your shore duty in my case an amphibious batallion which is basically working in a garage at nab Coronado. But then you go to a mobile battalion for sea duty where you actually deploy and go over seas. So I have like 2 and a half years sea duty but flew everywhere I went. So I am thinking it will mean squat to the NMC correct? But then I am wondering about all the mechanical training, watch standing, weapons training. Is all that of any relevance? I guess it cant hurt to send it and see what happens.
