Having worked aboard ACOE hopper Unlimited dredges, I’ll tell you it’s a terrible job even by government standards. Compressed schedule so long days and no OT, Penalty pay, sewage pay etc. No travel days, terrible nepotism onboard the ships and really lackluster safety standards (ie. no fire drills, training). The schedule is really the silver lining and the federal benefits, but just my time there I was LUCKY to 150 hours of OT a year. In addition, the turnover is really high to prove my point. They have jobs for licensed positions open for literally years…speaks for itself. Just giving my opinion on the boats, but unless you’re retiring or its VERY close to home would not recommend.
