Freshly uploaded fancy video of the full-scale ice trials of the LNG-powered icebreaker Polaris from two years ago, by yours truly and his merry icebreaker men of Finland:
Sure, this ship only operates in the Baltic (although it has Polar Class 4 Icebreaker(+) ice rating so it could theoretically sail up north), but two derivative icebreakers based on the same general principle (without LNG fuel, but with added oomph in terms of ice class, power and performance) were developed and built for the Russian Arctic. Looking how e.g. Canadian Coast Guard icebreakers are struggling, how about getting a few of these instead of buying nearly 20-year-old offshore vessels? No other icebreaking ship has this level of maneuverability and overall operational capability in ice.
