This effect can be achieved with a boat following a ship in a canal. If you’re content with just sitting in the trough, it makes it slightly easier to keep a fixed distance ahead. Using it to save fuel is surprisingly difficult, and requires far more effort than it’s worth, especially since staying with it necessitates sudden throttle excursions that probably negate any gain. It beats the boredom, though.
