Another AB to Mate question

Just go to the homeport website and look at the checklist

No, the only difference between 500 ton mate and 1600 ton mate is one year extra on deck and 90 more days as AB. Oh, and half your time needs to be over 100 grt instead of 50 grt. You only need time as master or mate to get an ocean endorsement.

Oh ok I didn’t think there was a big difference in all that, my old captain who ran the same boat as me did the 1600 ton so I figured I could have went for that but I would have had to wait for the rest of my sea time so I figured I’d go for the 500 ton since that’s all I really need for what I want to do

It never hurts to go for a bigger license. Plans change, companies change, vessels keep getting bigger.

I second that. You should always go for the bigger license. It’s better to have it and not need it…than to need it and not have it. Go big or go home.
