AMO Applicant, Taking MSC Small Arms, No Firearms Experience

Agreed. The people giving the pass or fail test aren’t there to teach a course.
For anyone who’s never shot a weapon before, instead of angsting about failing the test, I would suggest visiting a gun club or shooting range and spend some time with an instructor beforehand to learn proper procedure.
Best to show up with confidence and peace of mind.

Hey man, I’m good with that as long as they are. I am completely comfortable being a whimpy chick who doesn’t want a bruise the exact shape of that stupid rifle on my non-D cup bra strap place if I don’t have to. Stupid rifle………………

If the situation arises where you actually need to use it, the last thing you are going to think about is recoil.

Carlos Hathcock was one of a kind.
I doubt they’re training civilians with M14s. The closes thing to a sniper rifle MSC is issuing are the old Garant M1’s.
If you’re an officer on an MSC ship, depending on what the mission is, you may be required to carry a Baretta M9 from time to time in a huge holster.
QRF teams are made up of unlicensed crew and issued Remington shot guns, M1’s or M9’s depending on their duty station.

MSC has been issuing M14’s to civilians for years lol. I know we still get old technology, but not ww2 old haha. The “QRF” (its called SRF now) team on my ship is primarily third mates and third engineers, and we have Mossberg M500 shotguns now and have had those for years.

How did this post get resurrected? I’ve taken small arms three times since I started it last January haha

I guess things have changed.

To clarify, MSC and MSC contracted vessels have M-14’s that are modified to only fire in semi auto. I saw a spreadsheet a few months ago that outlines the phase in of Sig Sauer pistols in both the USN, MSC and contract mariner ships. I have no idea how this is actually moving along but I will ask in a month when my next OCI kicks off. Also I have been told the M-14’s will be phased out starting FY 2020 for an AR platform. They have been saying it for years so who knows what will happen. My last small arms class in May the instructors also had heard this. The owner of a contracted training company was getting ready to move all his old M1A’s. I called dibs on one.

Yes. We need c.captain back as a frequent poster.

The really sad thing is that the M-14’s can’t be permanently altered to the semi-auto configuration to the satisfaction of BATF, and then sold to civilians.
But. . . . perhaps we can hope to have all the parts released as part-kits, to build our own M1A’s!!! [Oh please, if there really is a GOD-and not to be blasphemous either.]

You know you can get a brand spanking new M1A right?

Not to hijack this thread, but to reply to your comment:
Best quality would be a genuine M14. Second best quality is commercial forged receiver (eg: LRB), not an investment cast M1A receiver, with USGI parts from s M14 rifle. Third best quality: factory build rifle.

True, they’d all go “bang”, but it’s OK to wish for the best!
