Alaska mandates 14 day quarantine for outsiders?

So I was planning on going to bristol bay to fish on a boat this year. One of the skippers called me, we had a little interview and he tells me that alaska now mandates everyone coming from outside of state to be quarantined for 14 days. So, how do fishermen deal with that? Is there a way around it? Or do you have to fly there, sit in a hotel for 14 days then go fish?

For your protection as well as theirs. Be glad you have a job, and got the call. Many mariners are going through the same thing. Don’t know of any shortcuts or would be allowed by any competent skipper right now.

You’re exempt as a “critical infrastructure worker”

From the sounds of it, your captain has to submit a plan stating how he will reduce risk/exposure, and saying that you’ll self-quarantine onboard is acceptable.

I know that locations like Dutch Harbor and Bristol Bay for that matter do not have adequate hotels for the entire fleet to stay and quarantine. Many of the fishing companies have been doing 14 day quarantine before flying up… You would still need to fly up to AK and have some risk of interacting with people on flight, in airport, but better than doing nothing at all…
With that being said, here is from the state of AK guideline for fishermen

Ok so it seems like you can quarantine on the boat but then the whole crew has to stay. Well I doubt a lot of captains will want to hire me and then because of me, not get off the boat for 14 days:) the one I talked to didn’t))
