Ok, this is a preliminary list only as there are many gaps still to fill which I hope others here can help me with mainly Ocean Rig and Vantage has little about their newbuilds on their websites. Also is DEEPWATER ASGARD really not contracted and I found nothing yet about X-Drill signing any contracts to build yet. I have to wonder if there is any fire behind that [DELETED] smoke? Also note that this list does not include those drillships ordered to be built in Brazil which will be on a subsequent list coming.
Was told by a toi office person yesterday at lunch, they are in talks with another oil major for 4 newbuild drilldhips as well. And you pretty much can guarantee that pacific will excercise their #8 option.
Here is the list of drillships which are supposed to be built in Brazil. Time will tell if this is in anyway realistic but it is certainly very ambitious for some country with no history of heavy industry or shipbuilding. Of course, they are importing Korean know how, but you still need labor that can do the job to a quality required for a high tech sophisticated vessel. I for one am sceptical as I have little regard at all for Brazilians and their work ethic. I think in the end, this will prove to be a bad idea which won’t work!
Obviously, all these will drill for Petrobaz in the end and because I don’t even know if the yards to build these even exist yet, I’ve included nothing in that column with the exception of the ones to be built by EAS.
If the Brazilians can pulll this off then it will be a major miracle of industrial organization. Certainly without Korean know how to manage it, this wouldn’t stand a chance but I do not see Brazilian men being shipbuilders. It’s just not in their nature to work that hard and being union will just be icing on the cake. Maybe the ships will get built but they also might cost double to build local. Time and tide will tell.
Here’s the list with a few additions to the data and reorganized this time by delivery quarter and year. Obviously, one can see an almost 40/60 split between 2013 and 2014 for number of ships delivered with a rapid falling off of orders after that (except for Brazil but we’ve already put them into their own maybe category) Transocean to be expected leads all in rigs to be delivered after 2014 but if they have 4 additional ships coming then they will get a huge boost in total % on order. I have a total of 50 ships in this list now but believe there might be a few dark horses still to be flushed out although I can’t believe that X-Drill is really viable. Just look at their website and tell me if I am mistaken?
One of the biggest questions for all of us here of course is how many are coming to the GoM? Even if only 25% that would mean 12 additional ships coming but I think 20 is a more realistic number. That alone would mean something like direct 3500 rigbased jobs!
From what I am hearing and understand, I would not be surprised to see 25 from this list going to the GOM. On that list, the Rowan Renaissaince is doing one well in West Africa, then heading to the GOM.

I thought is was supposed to be coming to the GoM but the Rowan rig contract data showed Africa. This explains that.
So you really feel there is that much work backlog to justify 25 rigs to come to the GoM? WOW!
I think so for this initial list.
so basically all the Diamond, ENSCO, Noble, Atwood, Rowan, Transocean ships?
Personally, I want to see American companies dominate the GoM and the foreign Maersk & Ocean Rig bunch stay out of here. Especially Maersk…they do not want to play by American rules so FUCK THEM! I hope SeaDrill is different and does the job with only American people like the law says they should!

Well, I guess I dont want to be the bearer of bad news, but Transocean as well has filled out the one page form to allow Foreigners to work on their Rigs in the GOM.
The new angle now is oil companies requiring so many years experience in position on drilling rigs. If they can’t fill the spot, then they can keep their man.
Also, like myself my preference is not to work in the US. I will if I have to, but I won’t be volunteering. I would lose thousands. Many people are in similar situations.

I disagree, I think most companies are now hiring warm bodies (un-experienced, but qualified) people to fill positions and hope that they can keep top performance up. It is putting huge burdens on the people who actually have the qualifications and experience to do the job at hand.
Add another one to the GOM! Maersk just signed for #2 to a contract in the GOM:
Maersk Drilling has signed a contract with ConocoPhillips Company a wholly owned subsidiary of ConocoPhillips and Marathon Oil Company a wholly owned subsidiary of Marathon Oil Corporation for the second ultra deepwater drillship in a series of four identical drillships currently under construction.
The estimated total contract value is USD 694 million including mobilization, but excluding cost escalation compensation. The contract duration is three years, with options for up to an additional two years and commencement of operations is expected by mid-2014 upon delivery from Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea, mobilization to the US Gulf of Mexico and acceptance testing. The drillship will be equipped with two Blow-Out-Preventers (BOPs).
The drillship will be employed by ConocoPhillips and Marathon Oil for their respective drilling programs in the US Gulf of Mexico.

Jesus, when will it stop? There is not going to be any seafood left for Friday’s on all these drill ships.
