Hello. I am trying to become a merchant mariner. I tried turning applications online with no results. After that I began searching for what to do to find that I need to actually visit in person. I do live in central Louisiana and so going to the gulf is not a problem. However I am 20 and unemployed with meager savings. Though I do have enough to get to the gulf and stay a few days. I have my TWIC and MMC. I have the ratings of OS/ Wiper/ FH. I thought this all I needed. I knew that I could not get an STCW certification as an OS. But I did not know that I could take a BST to be more easily hired.
So my questions are as follows. Should I continue to look for local work to save money to take the BST and then go look for work? Or simply go down south now and see what results I can get? A third option is I may have enough money to take the BST but it will not leave anything to look for work. I will have to work locally in order to save money. Any and all advice is appreciated. I am willing to do any of these but am unsure of what will be the best option.

Its folks like you that make it difficult if not impossible for honest people to get answers. You give the rest of the industry (and this forum) a bad name. God forbid some one comes to you looking for help or worse yet you’re rude to a future boss. Were I your employer and saw this thread you’d pick up your last paycheck the next day.
