I look that photo and say how is it both of you left us so suddenly after all those decades? One always knows that death must come for everyone yet when someone as close as my dad and uncle were to myself, the hole left in one’s life ends up being much deeper that one would expect.

I can definitely empathize. My dad passed in 1998 and it’s like he died yesterday. He was a boilermaker and he was always interested in talking about ships and boilers. He worked on the SS America and SS United States (shoreside repairs). Probably where he got the asbestos that killed him.
so today my father was buried at the Georgia National Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery at Canton. My dad was drafted into the US Army from 1958 thru 1960 and served with the Signal Corps in Korea. For his service he earned the right to be interred with other active duty service men and women in a very beautiful place. The ceremony held for him was brief but was very dignified and solemn. He had an honor guard and taps played by a bugler. Per tradition, my mom received the flag which draped his coffin. So my mother, brothers and myself now move ahead with our lives knowing a hole now exists that will never be filled by any other person. As a father, mine was not perfect by any means, but he was mine and ours for many decades and from this point forward he will continue to fill that berth for all the days remaining ahead even if he is not present on the earth.
I expect this thread to wind down now soon but in closing only wish to tell all how grateful I am for your kind words and your support.

that is a very good idea shipmate and to call him often in the years to come. May you have many more years to share with him.
