A question for unlimmitted tonnage masters

When docking and undocking, how do you deploy your mates on a large cargo ship? Assume you have three deck officers aboard, in addition to the master. I recognize that there will be some variation in this, and it will vary based on the type and construction of the vessel. I’m hoping to get a representative scope of answers.

Thanks,
Nico

The way I do it on a PCTC; Chief mate in the wheelhouse on the EOT. Second mate on the bow, third mate on the stern. Once we have a couple lines out, sometimes before any lines are sent, the C/M goes aft to spot the ramp. Once we know the position the C/M can roam as needed while the other mates finishing tying up, casting off the tugs etc. If we have a cadet he minds the EOT after the C/M leaves the wheelhouse.

Some other captains have the C/M aft but it’s hard to supervise the aft mooring gang and spot the ship. Also the C/M is not available for other tasks till after all fast.

Thanks, Kennebec Captain. A few more like this and I’ll have just what I need.
