Once we have a couple lines out, sometimes before any lines are sent, the C/M goes aft to spot the ramp. Once we know the position the C/M can roam as needed while the other mates finishing tying up, casting off the tugs etc. If we have a cadet he minds the EOT after the C/M leaves the wheelhouse.
Some other captains have the C/M aft but it’s hard to supervise the aft mooring gang and spot the ship. Also the C/M is not available for other tasks till after all fast.[/QUOTE]
