When I worked deep sea, you were expected to be working every damn minute of your watch outside of the two coffee breaks. There was no “gimme time” on phones or in the lounge. Plus you often had mandatory overtime where you were damn sure expected to be working hard. Then I worked tugs, all of a sudden there was quite a bit of “gimme time” on phones, watching movies, hanging out. As long as the job got done, nobody cared. Then I shipped out with the government, all of a sudden it was almost all “gimme time” of hiding in lounges, pways and cabins, and very little work. The job got done but with the minimal amount of effort.
So in all, the job got done all 3 ways, but in vastly differing levels of effort. Everybody usually finds a spot where they’re comfortable with the workload.
