If you apply for this job, read the contract carefully. If I recall correctly, they can terminate you WITHOUT CAUSE at ANY TIME during your employment and then charge you a per diem plus travel expenses. If there is any reason whatsoever you could be left on the hook through no fault of your own, you should be aware of that fact.

Most of the fishing companies have similar terrible contracts that usually have lots of blatantly illegal provisions. Don’t let that bother you. They don’t want to fire people and then have to replace them. The work is hard, the weather is rough, the hitches are long, and the pay varies from poor to fantastic.

Most of the licensed guys that I’ve talked to from the Ocean Phoenix did ok there.

There are a few small tug companies in the PNW that also have similar ridiculous and illegal contracts.

as does EVERY Louisiana offshore operator

If only we all could work for Saltchuck the Mt Olympus of shipping companies.

Saltchuk , which is a family investment holding company, is actually a very good company. Some of the transportation companies that they own, like Foss, are good companies, certain other companies that they own suck.

Yes yes I’m quite sure this Tote stuff is just an anomaly and nothing bad has ever happened at Foss or their other outfits.

If something really bad has happened at Foss, I have not heard about it. The main problem at Foss seems to be that they have hired too many Crowley rejects into the office. The boats are getting older and are not maintained as well as they use to be. Most of the experience and ability at Foss is at or near retirement age.

Actually, Tote Tacoma/Alaska is one of their better companies.

Sea Star Lines is a relatively recent acquisition a few years ago that they have had previous problems with. Saltchuk was really put out when Sea Star got fined a few million dollars a couple years ago for price fixing.

Some of the other companies acquired in the past few years are poorly managed.

As a result, Saltchuk is taking a more active role in the non-financial management of the companies that it owns (rather than just being a mostly passive investor).

Saltchuk remains a good company.

Getting back to the job posting for a 3/AE posted at Premier Pacific Seafoods, it’s probably a pretty good job.

Probably…but a good job with a bad contract isn’t THAT good of a job.
imo

Those engineers (and Mates) from the Phoenix are all going to the Bering Sea factory longline fleet.

Bad contracts, bad weather, no benefits, good money on the hook and line boats…

I heard…

Well, back when Moby Dick was a minnow, the oil field in 1979 when I started as a deckie on a crew boat…no contract, no physical etc…hired over the phone or just show up to any company office and your in. But contracts to work the patch? Nah, glad I did my four years on crew, utility and supply boats back then…industry is in mine and friends of mine that are retired or about to, say when we were in was the last of the good times. We all agree the industry we all loved, is a paper work mess. My old Chief Mate who retired last year, said after I was injured thirteen years ago, that I got out when it was just starting to get stupid. He sailed 40 years and I had sailed 30 years when I was put to pasture at 40 on my tanker. I was AMO and that’s the only contract I ever sailed under. Times change, as does the tide, good and bad.

If you like steam it is a hoot … you will answer more bells in a single trip than most ships see in a lifetime.
