What kind of jobs are out there with short rotations and good work/life balances?

This will include having to complete a Towing Officer Assessment Record (TOAR). You will need to do this to work as Mate on any towing vessel.

Yep forgot to mention that, idk what academy OP went to but if he was fortunate enough to have gone to Mass they have a tugs and towing program that allows you to complete your TOAR while in school which is what I did and earned my Mate of Towing in addition to the 3rd Mates license. I’m pretty sure SUNY has something similar as well.

Despite that I still have to go through the same process as everyone else trying to get into the wheelhouse at my company, which is to have 3 captains “sign you off” stating your essentially capable of being a Mate.

I agree with this guy as well, I was a ot older than my fellow classmates and I’m at the point in my life where I’m about ready to settle down and start a family. If I was 22, single, and fresh out of school I would have loved to join MSC or something and see the world. Plus the hitches are so long you basically have no living expenses so you could pay off all your student loans and maybe even buy a house in your first few years out of school.

Yeah, leave your stuff at your parents house and don’t have your own place. Just don’t blow all your money on dumb shit when your home!!!

Any companies hiring? Dredge work doesn’t sound bad, I like the hands on work.

What companies? I’d like to start looking at what’s out there

Honestly wouldn’t mind starting as AB, I’d like to get some REAL experience on ships anyways before taking a 3M job anyways. I feel like it would be a better look. Rigs didn’t sound bad to me cause I heard they have full gyms on board, gotta keep the gains a priority too

Doesn’t your Academy have a career services office?

For the Gulf read the Maritime Employment thread, and contact Miss Claudette for assistance.

For tugs, use the internet job websites to search.

Yes they do, I figured checking the forums as well wouldn’t hurt.

There are some dated lists in the Maritime Employment thread. Some good general advice too.

Career Services would have up to date employer contact info, and the name of the right person to contact. Some companies have a recruiter that will gladly talk to Academy kids, but won’t talk to experienced mariners that call up.

Some companies like walk ins, or only hire walk ins (common in the Gulf). Other companies will not a let a walk in through the gate.

That’s what a lot of deck classmates ended up doing who wanted to start working asap. It’s honestly a great way to just get your foot in the door somewhere, gain some actual real world experience, and earn the respect of both the unlicensed and licensed guys by showing you’re a hard worker and passionate about the job. I mean how can you honestly expect to give a guy orders or instructions about something if you can’t even do it yourself.

You’ve already got the licenses and credentials, if you show the company you’re worthy of working there then soon enough spots will open up and I’m sure most companies prefer to promote from within. I’ve heard people spending about a year or two working as an AB before being promoted, which is not a long time at all in the grand scheme of things.

LOL. Does he have the proper bloodline?

The Texas Enterprise AKA Mary Ann Hudson and the Mississippi Enterprise AKA the Shelia Mcdevitt AKA Rosina Topic are still sailing. They are seacor, crewed MMP and MEBA.

The coastal 202 (florida enterprise?) was scrapped a few years ago.

I have clients who work for them and love there job. Some are now Engineers and Mates.

If you are just starting out, you should just get a pilot’s job somewhere. They make bank and you are home every day. Good gig.

I’ve been applying!

Your comment is just like when the boomer told the recent grad he just needs to take a “crappy 3rd job off the open board”. It’s been years since a 3rd job has stayed on the open board.

This entire thread astounds me. I’ll probably get called “a boomer”, like it’s an insult?, but guys used to get whatever job they could. You got some experience and then could look around for something you wanted more. Now it’s a deal breaker to hire someone if you’re not in constant cell service.
