USNS Big Horn Grounding

Big dry docks there. Not sure how active…

Not much activity at the moment according to Marine traffic.

@Salvatore_Mercoglian reports The navy oiler USNS Big Horn is underway with tugboat assist likely heading to a dryock for repairs!

Duqm (Oman Drydock Company (ODC)) has two significant sized graving docks. Photos are from 2 years ago and the yard had a large backlog of work.

The WHOLE fleet oiler problem start with the USN NOT FUNDING MSC ships. Both in quantity and in operating costs. I saw that while at MSC HQS back in the 2000 time period. MSC was supposed to get new T-AO before the Kaisers started wearing out, but again that DID NOT HAPPEN. Navy being cheap and taking far too long to get the L&C into service.
Did you know that the USN CUT two T-AO before they were finished at Tampa Ship. do you remember that one T-AO was sold to another Navy?

So MSC has to fulfill MORE lift and UNREPs with LESS than the need oiler force.
Do you remember the old MSDS which was supposed to to on tankers? I was cut and scrapped why? Cheapsters in OPNAV.

and as noted MSC has to put an T-AO into ROS because of insufficient funding for enough crews

As far a tankers and oilers is concern, they “are not a priority” former CNO

All caps makes you look dumb. FWIW.

I recall unrep speed was 13 knots. I think it had something to do with CPPs. We didn’t have those, but was set there to be consistent across the Navy.

This was certainly the UNREP speed for DD-963 and CG-47 class, due to the CRP props. Allowed speed control by RPM, at 100% pitch, whereas lower speed was under pitch control. (Note: last sea billet as XO of DD-977).

Glad to know my memory isn’t completely gone. It was 13 knots on Nimitz class.

And mine is just a shade off. I haven’t UNREPped since 1992.
