Considering that the two largest organizations with members working for MSC these days are the Bloods and the Crips, I feel as though the unions are already diminishing in influence.

I’ve haven’t heard much good about MSC period. Everyone I’ve ever talked with who worked for MSC complains about the same things, low pay, sickening long contracts, being treaded like shit from their office, GI Joe wannabes in the bridge, double servings if SASH for all the female mariners, short amount of time at home, high percentage of suicides or suicidal thoughts, horrible work environment & subordinates with even worse work & moral ethics. In 1998 when I investigated working for them it wasn’t the union hall who I talked with & who sent me a packet. It was direct hire from MSC. I sure hope it’s not required by any state or federal law to join a union to work there because paying dues to a union to work at one of the worse places that no one likes would be the dumbest thing ever.

You aren’t required to pay union dues at MSC, NOAA etc even though they represent you. In the past for engineers that choose to pay MEBA dues, it’s not much, after 2 years sailing you could apply for group II membership with no initiation fee. Doesn’t mean you’ll get in first time but you likely will eventually. Many chose that route to better pay, working conditions and pension

It is a plan- step one establish a very systematic Supreme Court, step two challenge conventional norms/rules at every turn- elevate to a sympathetic court- repeat and repeat until you are continually eroding the power of the legislature and the courts and increasing the power of the executive

I’m not aware of the draft being used on Mariners since Vietnam and I believe impressment ended some time ago, so yes, they had a choice.
You are more than welcome to work on a non union ship. You are more than welcome to take your skills anywhere you’d like. No one is being forced to work in a union. If you want to start a pool cleaning busines with your experience on Tankers, you are more than welcome to. You can start a SAS company. You can run for Mayor. You can sell coconuts on the side of the road. The only limitations to your employment are the ones you set upon yourself.

It might not be that blatant. Maybe fire everyone that deals with mariner’s credentials and documentation.
Well we don’t WANT to get rid of the Jones Act, but seeing as there are no more licensed mariners and no one has current documentation for their ships, I guess we have no choice.
