Trump Order to End Collective Union Bargaining

He’s the same guy who always talks shit about unions, but in the pay threads, he’ll go on about how the unions need to negotiate higher wages so he’ll benefit from the rising tide lifting his boat.

The epitome of a freeloading leach.

Does this EO even apply to the existing union contracts? This applies to federal employee unions which would maybe prevent MSC employees from unionizing.

Our contracts are with companies (ie, Patriot Contract Services), then the government hires those companies to man their ships.

These jobs are already the shittiest jobs we have so if they want to cancel the contract to lower the wages/benefits, good luck manning the ships.

You found a picture of Trump actually laughing?
Even a real smile, not just a snarky grin, is hard to come by.
Is it AI generated?
If not, what was the occasion?

Exactly, then they can outsource the USMM and don’t have to pay American wages. It’s all part of the plan my friend. Say goodbye to the JA

Saying goodbye to the Jones act will require changing the existing law, ie Congressional action. What indication do you have that this will happen?

All the department shutdowns and regulations suspended or ignored thus far in the implementation of Project 2025 were also established by congress. That hasn’t slowed him down. Even the Voice of America which was established in 1942 was shutdown overnight. The Jones Act can be abolished or ignored and 99.99% of the population wouldn’t know or care about it.

There is no law mandating there shall be an Office of Immigration Detention Ombudsman (one of the things cited in your link as being eliminated).

However there IS a law that sets the requirements of the Jones Act that we’re all familiar with. If they want to change that, that’ll require Congressional action.

This is a way they could do it I suppose, just not enforce violations of the law. Kind of like how the feds don’t enforce federal laws against weed. We shall see…

Dunno. Probably just another Dem grandee got caught and dragged off in handcuffs.

I mean, you could make an executive order declaring inflation is a national emergency, and in the interest of national security all jones act waivers must be approved.

Worth noting, they are not tracking “repeal the jones act” or anything related to maritime on the scoreboard.

Also likely illegal:

In January 2021, the law was amended such that no waiver can be issued without a finding that no U.S.-flag vessels are available under all circumstances (Department of Defense-issued waivers previously did not have to comply with that requirement), and non-DoD-issued waivers are limited to 10 days extendable to 45 days “with respect to any one set of events.”

Perhaps most significantly, and after 70 years, Congress reverted in substance if not in words to the original formulation of “necessary in the conduct of the war.” Congress changed the “in the interest of national defense” standard for DoD-issued waivers “to address an immediate adverse effect on military operations.”

But, once again, the question of enforcement…

Don’t worry these guys got it covered!

I mean that hasn’t stopped Trump before. A lot of what he’s doing to USAID is likely illegal.

Maybe…
Absent federal work, how much independent deep-sea American flag shipping is there? How many other places do they have to go?

Unless you are a CIVMAR, or some other direct federal employee, this would not affect you.

Not downplaying the signifcance of this. But working on a vessel contracted to the government or working on a grey hull operated by a private company, and you are a federal contractor, are very different than being direct federal employees.
