You are a snappy dresser but imagine if they had seen that expensive fancy car you drive.
5 years. I’m only going to sail for 5 years…lol
Was at a training class a couple days ago and a guy said those exact words LOL. Do they take a class at the academy where they teach them to say that?
Jimmy Buffet used to drop his daughter off on Monday mornings at my airport and pick her up on Friday afternoons to go home for the weekend. Talked to him all the time, great guy, I have pictures of his Widgeon that he crashed and almost drowned in.
Years ago, when I was registered with a yacht agency in south Florida, they called me because somebody was looking to hire a captain with a pilot’s license. I thought it might have been Jimmy Buffet because he had yachts and airplanes. Of course, back then in south Florida, it could have been Manuel Noriega or Carlos Lehder.
Please tell me what I need to do to become a more viable candidate to be an engineer trainee. They failed to respond. Those train guys must be a real special breed, especially when they can find one that doesn’t text and crash.
They don’t want you because you have a very good chance of being an arrogant asshole.
Skycowboy I’ll first say good job to you for getting so many licenses. I think one problem someone hiring you may have is that you’re into too many things. Without knowing specifics of your careers I’d say an HR person would want the guy or girl that’s been a Captain for 5yrs as opposed to the person that got their license and sailed for a bit and moved onto something else.
Also, again I don’t know you so am not trying to unfairly judge you but I sailed with a Captain that also had an Engineering License. Though it wasn’t a Chiefs License. The engineering staff couldn’t talk to him. No matter what happened the Captain always though he knew better and was smarter because he had a two licenses. Very little experience since he was deck most of his career but thought of himself as a secondary chief almost and caused lots of headaches for everyone.
No, I’m pretty sure they didn’t want me because I was already in my 50’s and that’s not an ideal age to enter a training program.
Yeah, I got one of those calls for an immediate need for a helicopter pilot. It was the people from Sea Shepard. I took an AB job instead
They don’t want you because you have a very good chance of being an arrogant asshole.
Being an arrogant asshole doesn’t have to be a problem, just have to learn to hide it. Check out Ben Franklin’s autobiography - it’s available free on-line.
I tried being one once but just couldn’t get the hang of it. First it seemed like way too much work, second it wasn’t any fun, and third it seemed counterproductive against all my volunteer work with under privileged kids.
If you do this for 2 years you’re in it for life. You’ll never find a job on shore with the same pay and time off.
Exactly. I can’t imagine having to work a 9-5 job
Exactly. I can’t imagine having to work a 9-5 job
in a cube, with a cold sandwich, too air conditioned, hunched over an email-memo-tps report, surrounded by people you don’t know, commuting, having to go shopping for the things you need, having to make too many choices about things that don’t matter at all, watching terrible tv, being subjected to advertising at every moment. They want you to think its called ‘freedom.’ I want them to know that I know it isn’t.
This is the truth.
I see a few problems with this.

It seems offshore people have dept out the ass. If you want good credit get 2 Credit cards and have the balance paid in full each month. Then pull a $2000 loan from the bank and have that auto pay its self over 24 months then pull another one.

What are you doing with your money? Are you using it to make more money or are you just sitting on it and what you make is what you make and thats it?
You can play the stock market now (options trading) with less money. For example for every 1 contract that is worth 100 shares of the stock price. If you do it on your own you will fail so you need to find trading groups that have chat rooms and send out morning and daily alerts. Let me explain it a little more.
I am with a group that is small but the teacher/owner has been doing it for years. 10 years in fact. He is really fucking good. I made $1,700 in 2 weeks sitting on my ass for 20-30 min in the morning. I had a $500 day a $857 day and a bunch of $300ish days. I was warned that if I kept going i would blow up my account because I was risking to much each morning I was on the line for about $4,700 to $5,000 each morning now of course you would not lose it all because you have your stop loss so you would lose what ever you felt for that morning would be around $500 bux or so and then you move on to the next day. Or you could risk it and let the contracts ride for the day or longer but you start to suffer from time decay.
The Teacher (Day Trader) will send out alerts Text alerts every morning on what he him self is going to trade. Now he always gets better fills then I do because I am not that good and can always get in lower then I will but thats not the point He tells you the strike price he is playing and when a good time to enter
Example.
Morning text alert
NFLX
142C
Enter near 143.60 Tests to 145.0
So thats saying Netflex 142 is the strike price and get in around 143.60 (stock price) and it could go to 145.0 by the end of the day
Ofcouse you have to know how to read the chart and the MacD because sometime you are going to get in because its not going to get to his recommend entry but you can tell by the chart that you need to get in NOW.
Now when you get out is all on you tho. Another thing to remember that the closer you play to or (in the money or at the money) you are going to get more ticks per the stock movement. It will cost more but it is safer. I like playing in the green but i can’t always do that so I will play 1 out of the money but no more then that.
Take to day as its a good example. I got the text alert but I did not like how it was acting so I passed on it how ever if i would have stay in i would have met my goal ($238.88) but I passed. Then around lunch i wanted to get in but my step dad said no no don’t do it but if I did 5 min later it went up and i would have got my goal then too. Then around 2:25pm I knew it was going to be a calls play (calls goes up puts go down) so I bought 40 contracts($3500ish) at .85 and sold them at .92 thats a 7 cent move and thats all you want to play it safe. I made $238.88 cents take home is $197 i did this in 30 mins. It happens much faster in the morning with in 10-15 mins. some times much faster. Its ment to be quick in and out I played at the end of the day (still a good time)
As a rule If you have less then $25,000 in your account (I do) you are a PDT and can only trade 3 times a week. Once you have 25k in your account you can trade as many times as you want all times of the days 5 days a week. Your money is all back in your account by the next morning. So you could if you don’t have a lot of dept get a Walmart job or a night job has to be nights for $20,000 a year then trade in the morning 3 times a week and have total income over 50k. By setting a target goal of such a lower # you should be able to nail $238 almost every time when you start getting good. I see people in chat making 3,500 a morning 1500 morning the shit goes on and on so $238 day after day is VERY reasonable. I have learned a lot from my step dad and I am going to learn a lot more. I see myself taking this on full time after 5 years. I want to still go offshore and get my lic up but because I like being offshore. I have some dept because I am paying for past mistakes but i do love working offshore and this land shit is nice but I have a 400 a week job and 3 days off and its just to much time off. even if the money is going my way (and it is) I would love to do both at least till I’m 40 then I will get a land job working nights at Walmart stocking and then day trade 5 days a week.
http://www.tradespoon.com/ was said in chat a few months ago and i looked into it and i like how the AI can predict the stocks with amazing accuracy but they also do text alerts. I only had a 6 day demo but i liked what i saw and can see why it was brought up in chat.
I am looking into web sites that will alert you when stocks get to the high or the low of the day and that would be the fucking bomb right there. I use Etrade as my broker because I LOVE how you can set it up. Maybe I will post some videos so you can see my set up If there is interest.
I pushed my step dad to start doing this full time as he never has and regrets it. But after falling on hard times my self it pushed him and when i started doing better then him he started taking notice and we started sharing ideas and working out strategy that will work for us. On another note State Farm raised everyone insurance 10% because they had to pay out more then normal last year. This is the bull shit that pushes me to trade because I can see wages going lower and prices going up as the years go on. Fucking Bull shit.

More power to you but (and I have very little sympathy for insurance companies in general) a company raising its prices in response to its actual operating costs is BS yet what you describe yourself doing is not? One might argue that kind of trading is one small part what is exactly wrong with this country. But hey I guess it’s a fine line.
From Bonfire of the Vanities:
“Just imagine that a bond is a slice of cake, and you didn’t bake the cake, but every time you hand somebody a slice of the cake a tiny little bit comes off, like a little crumb, and you can keep that. […] If you pass around enough slices of cake, then pretty soon you have enough crumbs to make a gigantic cake.”
Chapter 10, page 229
This is the way Judy describes Sherman’s job as bond salesman to their daughter, Campbell. The quotation reveals the essential meaninglessness to society of Sherman’s job and the jobs of all the traders on Wall Street. They really create nothing of their own and contribute nothing; they just collect the commissions off the bonds they sell, like crumbs that fall off each slice of golden cake

its not many people who feel satisfied by their pay-checks. Its the work it-self that satisfies people. Finished a novella by one of my favourite scifi authors a few days ago. A background feature of the society that he built is that everything can be automated, and therefore people are just paid automatically so that the economy keeps turning over and they can get the things they need and want. One of the things that some of them want is meaningful work: and they pay for the privilege of having work. The protag is the administrator of a space-port. She pays 1/3 of her wage to do that job, even though it could be done by automation.

I’ve recommended this book before but if you want an easy read on what motivates people in the work place try “Drive” by Daniel Pink. He has a gift for gathering up actual facts from actual research and presenting it very clearly. Rather than fact-less fairytales. He breaks it down to extrinsic and intrinsic factors. “Meaningful” work you mention would be an intrinsic motivator. Short story is, if you pay (extrinsic)people decently, they are more powerfully motivated by Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose (intrinsic).
I would say a company that has some advanced ideas on establishing a workplace that features opportunities for employees to function independently, allows and encourages them to master their given trades and professions and promotes a feeling of all serving a greater purpose in some way will find less push back on the topic of wages (assuming of course a fair living wage). On the other hand ignore these intrinsic factors and I bet the only topic of discussion in the messroom is pay.
There are some great case studies in the book as well.
Here is another related piece http://insidestory.org.au/workless-or-working-less in the guise of a book review you might find interesting about the same phenomenon you mention above. Work vs labor. The future of jobs. Leisure. Guaranteed incomes.
More generally, the whole social structure built around the idea of a “job” or “career” has been eroding for decades and is now approaching collapse. While perceptions of short-term job security fluctuate with the business cycle, the idea that anyone can reliably plan a course through his or her working life has essentially disappeared. Any job, anywhere, can disappear because of changes in trade patterns, or budget cuts, or simply because cutting it will boost next quarter’s profits.
Technological change has been rendering old skills obsolete ever since the invention of the spinning jenny in the eighteenth century, and will doubtless continue to do so. The real problems we face today are not technological but social and economic. Like it or not, a radical reorganisation of work is under way. The question is whether we can shape it to benefit the world as a whole, or whether it will continue to enrich the few at the expense of the many. As Dunlop concludes, “We have been told that when it comes to work, there is no alternative. What these new technologies suggest is that maybe there is.
How and where?
