They are not particularly sought after positions, low paid compared to the oilfield for one reason. Everyone wants to go for a hitch, but not stay. The guys that make out move to Chile and work it that way. Also it is not American crews.

I’ve follwed the Mutt episode here and I empathize with him but I’m not sure I have enough information to condone or condemn Chouest’s actions.
On the other hand a responsible employer would have done everything in their power to get the guy home as soon as the news of a death arrived. Whether the Chouest family attempted to do so or was even aware of the gravity of the situation is not clear, I doubt they were though. The manager or whatever title he carries appears to not have handled the situation well but that should not reflect on Chouest as a whole.
I would imagine the lack of response Mutt received from the Chouest family was due to liability concerns. It was a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation for them.
I have had deaths in the family of crew members before and we ALWAYS let them know what efforts were being made to get them home ASAP no matter where in the world we were. In all cases as long as the crew member knew you were doing your best and leaving no stone unturned they understood; as painful as it was.

I think I may have the real story now. Let me add a little history.

1-Ran off one vessel for insubordination

2-Ran off another vessel for lying and getting caught lying to his manager.

3-So they needed someone on one of the icebreakers and he’s not fired, but no one wants him. So they send him down there. He arrives down there with the attitude that this is my only trip, I am only sight seeing, I am doing the office a favor just being here. I have a relief spot waiting for me in the gulf on a new OSV. I don’t need this job, I am not returning to this vessel. He got there with an attitude and it did not get better. From day one he was talking shit about the captain on there an the condition of the vessel. He did not take his job or his watch seriously. About two weeks in to his hitch he was at the wheel during a critical maneuver drawing pictures and coloring. The Chief Mate wrote him up for that. Fast forward with two weeks of non stop BS, they got to Rothera, a british research station, and had a science get together where Mutt got drunk. The chief mate showed up late after midnight to say hello to some people and Mutt charged him, grabbed him and took a swing, but missed. As if that were not bad enough he got so drunk he did not show for his next “2” watches on Sunday. On Monday he shows up like nothing has happened and starts to assume his watch. This is when he is relieved of his duties and sent to his room. Mind you there were two weeks left on this voyage. He was pretty quiet for the next two weeks. At the end of the cruise party at Palmer station he gets belligerent and obnoxious to a few people. He did not fight this time, mostly a bunch of chest thumping, but he had offended a few people and the station manager asked him to leave. He mouthed off a few words to some Palmer station people, but he left.

And that folks is what happened.

"About two weeks in to his hitch he was at the wheel during a critical maneuver drawing pictures and coloring.

What’s so unusual about that? He’s a mate, maybe he was studying to be a DPO.

keep people like mutt off of my gangway. if they’re onboard, fire them for breaking the rules. I have run 2 people off my ships in 24 years, it happens when I’m pushed far enough.
this job is difficult enough without insubordinate and unstable crew members.
now I can understand why some people may not have believed his “death in the family” story: the timing makes it seem contrived.

Tengineer, are you the old man in the bus video?

He was running as mate he’s actually a master, he should have known better.

Actually…he sounds like a jerk.

Only two things in this industry that you should protect at all costs.

  1. Your license
  2. Your reputation
Sounds like Mutt didn’t really give a rat’s arse about keeping either intact.

And let me tell you something, nobody has wanted to hit another person more than I did on my last hitch (the story requires beer for the telling). But did I hit him? Nope, because I happen to like both my reputation and my license.

(And I probably could’ve won because I fight dirty…)

You can take it out on me!!

Please!!

 Funny. After years and years of hot as hell engine rooms the last thing I do is get hot voluntarily. However, I think I coulda taken that old fart out; I got a brown belt in karaoke.

Well Steve, unlike the horse’s ass that I was working with on my last hitch, you are a true sailor. I don’t ever get mad at sailors.

Will do 10! Next time you are in the Emerald City, we’ll visit the Sloop, I’ll tell a few lies, and we’ll raise our glasses to those that have crossed the bar before us!

I’m not allowed in the Sloop anymore
