Very interesting that the “Father of Underwater Archaeology”, Peter Throckmorton appears to be left out of the book. Of course he has passed on. Much of Mr. Throckmorton’s work predates Ballard. I had the pleasure of spending time with Peter, on a “treasure hunt”, so to speak. The organizers had enlisted him to give the project some legitimacy. Very interesting man. His work and his partnership with George Bass set the foundation for the study.
Oh, and for the record, Archaeology is a branch of anthropology.
How intriguing that must have been… cool.
Thanks for record too… are you Ologyologyist ? lol
Wonder why he was left out of the book? When I think about “Throckmorton” I think of Richard8000miles… and the echo chamber… makes me laugh.

Out of respect, I need to go read up.
I couldn’t tell you why Peter was left out of the book (he may be in there somewhere, since I haven’t read it), but my guess is that Ballard’s work is the main thrust. The time spent with Peter was definitely VERY cool. I signed on to the project as a consulting engineer and worked for them on my “time off”. We made a few trips out to the remote areas of the Bahamas to search. Besides working alongside with us out on deck and in the water, Peter would also give lectures to us in the evenings. I learned much from him in a very short time and value the little bit of life that I shared with him. He had many, many tales. His story of purchasing the ELYSSA was one of my favorites.
Well put, I just got out of the academy with the b.s. in maritime transportation (bull s&*! In marine transportation) from our original class of 146 we had 11 test for mates. It’s not for everyone. But long run, the money made right out of school is HUGE in relation to any other degree.
