Those were the days:
Engine Room of SS United States
The SS United States’s funnels – the tallest ever installed on a ship, as high as a six-story building – were slanted sharply backwards, giving the impression of speed:
The SS United States has arrived in Mobile, Alabama, where crews will spend six months removing hazardous materials before it is sunk off Florida’s Gulf Coast as the world’s largest artificial reef. Purchased by Okaloosa County in 2024 for $10.1 million, the vessel will also be commemorated with a $1 million seaside museum. The 1,000-foot ship, once the fastest ocean liner, set the transatlantic speed record in 1952 and served as both a luxury liner and military vessel before being retired in 1969.
