Sitting down on watch. When is it okay and why is it not acceptable?

We did that during our 12 hours on duty. That was the benefit of having two people on watch, one could do safety inspections and such.

Oh yes, because there’s 42 hours of safety inspections to be done per week.

Get real, it’s like 1 or 2 hours a day during the days when we weren’t underway or on station.

Do you really think it’s necessary to have a mate on watch and a licensed lookout on the bridge at ALL times no matter what the boats doing?

I never said that. I don’t know how many people are on your boat on deck, but I’ve got three mates, two ABs, and an OS. I’d be in the watch rotation as well if it weren’t for the paperwork load the office and MSC hit me with on a daily basis. Maybe then I’d do what you do too.

Well, I’m not there anymore but there were 4 bridge officers and the Captain stood a 12 hour bridge watch. All paperwork was done on the bridge and any paperwork to be done when the captain was off watch was done by the Chief Mate.

This is in line with the way we operated. You have to have 4 (including the master) as watch keepers because when you go to DP alongside the rig there is no locker listed as containing “spare DPO.”
