Shell Arctic News

I guess they expected worse so the outcome was a success?

How come they are using that old vessel, was it rejected from Alang? too much paint not enough steel? steel rusts less in cold climates so keep it up north?
Was it hired by a statistician, the oldest drill ship in the world must of had something going for it?

All about the ice class certification.

That makes sense, but the average age of vessels can also be influenced, or even controlled by tax policy (deprecation calculations) and by regulation. If the government decided that the oil companies should not be allowed to use crap equipment for drilling in the arctic it could easily put sufficient obstacles in place to force the purchase of newer equipment.

Very true, that’s also what hindered the response barge. It was the only ice class barge around and happened to be 36+years old.

CNN had about a two minute segment with a reporter aboard the NOBLE DISCOVERER on the news tonight.

So the planning for this billion dollar operation started in a pub one Friday night and was operational by Monday morning…it makes Shell look even more stupid!
Or more worrying, not someone to trust drilling in the Arctic…
