Sea Star's El Faro
Notwithstanding the fact that parts of the article may be more germain to the life of a Filipino Merchant Seaman, what parts of the CNN article do you guys take issue with?
First off, it is a lightweight article full of outdated stereotypes that is adding NOTHING to the conversation about the El Faro incident. It is simply a puff piece designed to sell book written by an “expert” who has very little experience at sea.

Secondly, The Officers and Crew of the El Faro were not working in a “prison with a salary”, they were working in a profession that they chose, and could freely leave at any time. They worked in “first world” conditions, and were probably very thankful to have the jobs they did.

Most importantly, I understand that there are some very bad operators in the world, and that is what the MLC 2006 standards are supposed to address. Simply climbing on the coat tails of a tragedy to push an unrelated agenda is a little unprofessional in my humble opinion.
