Republican congress equals more offshore jobs?

Not only do we have a Republican majority in congress now but the Republican party also has enough seats to override presidential veto’s.

Although the price of crude has been dropping due to the OPEC price wars the US domestic energy production is at all time highs.

As the president said in his press conference we are closer now to energy independence than we have been since the industrial revolution.
Energy production equals jobs. Not only on the Keystone pipeline or the deep water gulf but also the offshore Great Lakes and offshore ANWAR.
I have been waiting many years for some kind of stimulus to prod our government into drilling the Lakes and ANWAR.
I always thought it was going to be fuel oil going over $5/gallon or a ridiculously high crude oil price.

But with crude below $78/bbl. I don’t think that is going to be the stimulus but rather a desire from the US public to achieve true energy independence and the public desire to loose no more US lives in the deserts of Babylon.

My prediction is if and when they do tap the Great Lakes and ANWAR a good majority of the work will be done by boats that have been mothballed far too long.
And it will take skilled “mud boat” Captains and Mates to operate these vessels.

Coming out of the academy with an Unlimited and a limited tonnage license plus DP will not help you a bit if you don’t know how to run a boat.

The Alaskan OSV season will be very short and only a select few officers will be willing to spend the Artic summer on an OSV so that further limits the “competition” for that job sector.

The Great Lakes has about a 3 month winter season (give or take) that makes operating any vessel other than an ice breaker or ice hulled vessel just about impossible.
That translates into OSV companies that take contracts on the GL expecting crew members to pull longer hitches in exchange for a solid 3 months of the winter off.
This also limits the number of crew members willing to pull the kind of hitches that will be required to maximize the summer season on the Lakes.

Yes a good deal of the work could be done by DP boats in the end,but I think in the beginning most of the work will be done by boats that have not yet been converted or that are worth converting.

And I also think that instead of DP being a closed market to a select few members of the “DP Fraternity”, the demand for US DPO’s will become great enough that companies will start to train some of us ol’ school Captains in the “Order of the DP”.

Demand will outweigh the supply and that will force a change for those of us wanting to move forward with the changing technology of our industry but can not seem to get a foot in the door anywhere that could help us improve ourselves.

I say drill, drill, drill!; as long as it is done in an environmentally friendly way especially on the GL where many of us draw our drinking water from.

And let us not sell our domestic crude on the international market but rather save it for true US energy independence so we can stop participating in the centuries old war in the Middle East.

Bullshit.

The GOP only has 54 Senators. Under Senate rules it takes 60 votes in favor to even bring legislation to the floor for a formal consideration. It takes 66 votes to override a veto. So, no, the GOP does NOT have enough votes to override a veto.

I’m sorry to have to say it, but don’t expect much of a change in Washington.

Great Lakes? I have never once heard of there being any energy under the Lakes…where on earth did you get that from?

He probably is referring to the Marcellus Shale which extends from Kentucky all the way up into Ontario. It’s primarily a dry gas play. Offshore drilling will never happen in the lakes.

Pass the crack pipe buddy.

I heard the Canadians just passed a bill allowing drilling in the lakes but vessel operators are required to have multiple DUIs.

I’ve never visually seen them, but I’ve observed loads of radar contacts on Canadian platforms in Lake Erie. Did a quick Google, and they’ve been doing this since the 50’s albeit for gas. I’ve heard talk of drilling from the American side, but it was directional drilling from shore based locations. Considering the number of cities that get their drinking water from the Great Lakes, I don’t think you’ll ever see the public embrace offshore oil production up there. For the past few years, there has been an effort to put in offshore wind farms in Erie and Ontario. This move has been met with fierce resistance over migrating birds. I think you’ll have a long wait on those lucrative offshore jobs. The mid atlantic and eastern gulf stand a better chance, and that may never happen… especially with low oil prices.

LMFAO !

I enjoyed that.

Please excuse my pipe dream. I took someone’s word for it that the Republicans had enough majority to override a presidential veto instead of doing my homew…hang on let me take another hit…hooooommmmmmeeeeeeewooooorrrrrrkkkkkkk…aaaaaahhhhhhhh…yeeeeeeaaaaaaa…that’s what daddy likes…

Republican congress will have no effect on offshore jobs. Heck the outgoing democratic congress just oversaw one of the largest drilling expansion programs in USA history. Both parties are owned by the oil companies despite their rhetoric for the gullible’s consumption and the LAST thing any oil major wants to do right now is expand drilling thereby further depressing the price of oil.

Congress had nothing to do with it. It was done at the state level. There was no stepped up drilling on federal lands. The only thing the senate did was block the pipeline.

Obama to unveil offshore drilling plans for oil, natural gas - this was back in 2010

Is Obama Really Anti-Drilling? - This is from last March

The Interior Department’s announcement on Thursday that it’s safe to do underwater seismic testing to look for oil and gas off the Atlantic coast is rekindling the fight over offshore oil drilling on the Eastern seaboard. This pretty much puts us back to where we were in March 2010, when President Obama decided to open up vast tracts of the Atlantic Ocean to oil drilling. Three weeks later, BP’s (BP) Deep Horizon oil rig exploded, effectively quashing the debate for the next few years.

The state governers have views as well:

Governor Christie has expressed his strong opposition to off-shore drilling in New Jersey, as well as drilling off the coast of other nearby states that could negatively impact the state’s 130 miles of coastline and multi-billion dollar tourism industry. He has also opposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities off of the New Jersey coast and has also restored beach replenishment funding to its full level.

I wish we could just put a tax on oil and LNG to make the states that didn’t want anything to do with it and keeping projects out of their states.
