Okay, so my current MMD expires in June. Need to get the ball rolling on the renewal process. I was going to test for my DDE 1,000 at this time, but might hold off till later this year as i live in Vegas and finding time to go off to a REC to test will be a pain. Maybe when the newborn is a bit older.
If I am just trying to keep my current ratings with no changes, can I just turn in my application for “Continuity”???
Of course with the new medical and documented sea service, etc.
Also, since I currently have QMED-RFPEW and 5 QMED ratings, will i receive the new Able Seafater-Engine when I renew???
My understanding of continuity is that it is used to put current ratings/license on hold if not sailing under it for a period of time. If you are only seeking to renew your current ratings, and are working at sea then submit your application as a renewal. The Able Seafarer endorsement should be given to you but I would list it on the application to be sure (I got it with no problem by doing this).
Yes. Simply email the NMC with their guidelines and request to amend your application to just a renewal for domestic endorsement and stcw, and that you want to make sure able seafarer engine is added. That should do what you need, like the other guy said. Continuity isn’t the solution you’re looking for.
Okay, so going through the renewal application, and I realize that I may not have the 360days of seatime. I didn’t sail for the first 2 yrs of my MMD and have been stuck in a shipyard on a new build for the last year. I got my QMED by going to Seattle Maritime, so 90 days worth of seatime in school and 90days internship.
I may have the most between 325-350days of seatime. Unless, i can count that school credit of 90days as seatime again. Otherwise, it looks like I will have to take the exam.
What I don’t get is will I now lose my STCW endorsements (RFPEW-OIler, Jr Engineer) because i don’t have the 360 days of seatime???
I didn’t even get them added to my MMD until late 2011.
Also, will I now lose my Proficient in Use of Survival Craft (Lifeboatman) & Tankerman Assistant as well???
Tankerman Assistant wasn’t even added till 2012.
Any thoughts from someone more knowledgable than me??? Mr Cavo???
Is that 325-350 days counting shipyard on a newbuild? Your company’s letter of sea time should show that time as something other than “Shipyard”. If it says anything else, contact your HR guy and explain to him why you need actual sea time listed on your letter. He will most likely comply.
Even if you don’t have the required sea service to renew, the open book renewal exam should be an option for you. You should not lose anything but tankerman asst. You have to have the right amount of loads/discharges to keep that.

Shoot, I guess I shouldn’t have even taken that Tankerman course then, haven’t even gotten a chance to use it and it’s already gone. Oh well.
I saw the open book test option, but was concerned about timing and the STCW portion of my endorsements. Maybe it will work out. Thanks
You need to work for a better Captain who knows how to take care of good hands!
Congrats with the newborn and good luck with the most challenging and rewarding job you’ll ever have.
Seems some good advice for you re testing, it will be tough logistics but you have come pretty far.

Yes, if you do not have current BST. If you don’t have the one year in five you wuill need to take a BST refresher course (there are not many) or re-take BST.

Survival Craft is the same as RFPEW, you will need to refresh BST. For tankerman-assistant, you’ll need to show time on a tanker and participating in cargo transfers, or re-take the course. You can avoid this by putting it into continuity, but you’ll need the course to restore it.
Well, the way I figure it I should be good on seatime after all.
Seattle Maritime school gives me 90 days credit,
33 days underway at school,
97.5 days (65, 12 hour days) for my internship, Then upgraded to QMED,
79 days at one job,
and 148 days at my current job, 12hr days so i think i should get credit for 222days.
That gives me a grand total of 447.5 days or 521.5 days if i get the day & a half credit.
Since by my calculations I have the 360 in 5yrs I shouldn’t have to do the BST refresher, correct?
Thanks for all the help, once again invaluable website.

You can’t use the 90 days credit from training to meet recency. The time underway training and internship is only creditable if it was on a near coastal or oceans vessel. Engine ratings are not alloowed by law to work a 2-watch rotation, and 12 hours is only authorized for 12-hours of watch. The same may apply to the internship.
Try and see what happens, but you may still needs to refresah BST.

Underway training was on a near coastal vessel.
Internship was as a wiper on an oceans vessel. That can’t be counted as 1.5x??? Already submitted this seatime when i upgraded to QMED a couple years ago.
As for the 2 watch rotation, thats what everyone is hired to do. 0600-1800 or 1800-0600. It’s on a foreign flag vessel working in the GOM. I will let the people earning the big bucks sort that situation out.
Ive heard about not getting the 1.5x credit, but also know of guys that have got it. So frustrating when the rule is set in stone, but not evaluated as such. Kinda feel that this rule makes no sense.
Guess I will just see if I can get my company to pay for the BST Refresher. Damn.
